Norwood win 94-84!

I can't believe Sturt could lose with Jacob Holmes an Australian representative and Darren Ng whom could probably start in the NBL!

Both Sturt mens and womens team have won championships this decade which is more than most teams playing. You can't have individual players winning championships which both teams tried to do tonight.

Don't normally watch ABA, but decided to get along to the mens game tonight. Impressive shooting performance by the Flames guards. Webber and #5 were too good for Sturt's array of guards. No-one seemed able to stop their speed or their clever use of picks and they just flat out drilled tough shots all night.

Holmes tried hard and he and Bowley put a good run together in the 2nd quarter that got it close for a bit, but the Flames had too many options, big men Krause and Grantham showing some good range when the defence collapsed.

I've not seen that much of Ng even at NBL level and had this idea that he was a 3pt specialist. Judging by tonights game, he is more of a Rip Hamilton type - an energizer bunny who uses constant movement to get his opponent out of position in order to score a lot from mid-range and with clever drives. Unfortunately for Sturt, tonight he never looked likely to get on a roll and Holmes scoring was not enough with the Sabres defence being picked to pieces by the Flames.

Any chance Sturt had of building momentum to get back in the game was constantly sabotaged by TO's in the first half and an inability to get any defensive rebounds in the second.

Sturt really seemed like a poor team judging by tonights performance, apart from flashes when they got a few stops and ran the floor. I'm guessing run and gun is normally their forte? Can anyone who watches ABA regularly fill me in?

Did both teams have all their regular players tonight? Sturt just seemed awfully short of big guys.

Sturt had their full team as far as I'm aware.

Thanks for the write up Beantown!

Todd Matthews was MVP & played a sensational game. He was well deserving of the award, although any of Krause, Webber, Matthews, or Cooper would have been a worthy winner.

Darren Ng finished with about 18 points but didn't really have much of an impact when it mattered. Holmes played a lone hand on the boards for Sturt, although Bowley was good later in the game. Norwood's outside shooting by Krause, Webber, & Matthews was the difference IMO. The Flames guards broke down every press that was thrown at them, with lightning quickness, which gave the Flames a lot of easy layups.

The better team on the night won for sure.

The Sturt women had an absolute shocker!!!

Dan Thompson had 7 offensive boards in the last quarter! Says it all really....

Thanks Lethal, Matthews was the #5 whose name I couldn't remember. I agree he was deserving of the MVP as well, although Webber definitely was not far behind.

Sorry guys, have to disagree re Webber - 6/26 fg with 4/14 from 3pt land if I remember the box score right. Thought he hogged the ball late inoffences and jacked up 3pt bricks fading away with a hand in his face. 23% from the field is worthy of being cut in the NBL, why she we applaud it at ABA level? Remember 6 of 26. Ever thought of maybe passing the ball once you drive toward the bucket?

Norwood certainly deserved to win and Thompson came up big with some boards bit thought he was tacky trying to start a scuffle with the loose ball with about 15 secs left, then proceeded to scream like an ape.

Darren did look tired and holmes played consistently well but didn't get enough help to battle all of norwood's bigs. Sturt seem quite young compared to norwood - will sturt have more upside over the coming years if that us right re ages?

Cavolo you sound like a Sturt supporter.

Here you are having a go at Webber and then say Holmes played "Consistently well" yet he was 6-25 from the field (24%). Is that a "consistently well" game for an Australian representative?

Jacob Holmes still played extremely well. Seems he got frustrated and went it alone scoring a huge amount of points, by himself. There seemed to be too much emphasis on one TD player. The players who demand the $$ get treated as though they are the support act.
All in all both teams were quite evenly matched, you could not say we were outmanned in the bigs department because the same line-ups have seen some big wins recently with Sturt the victors.
Holmes and Ng, played well but so did the Norwood big 4.
The big difference on the night, apart from Ng's comments in the press that Norwood played their best the week before to loose by 1, was the coaching.
Rupert made changes and tried options, whereas predictable Liam concentrated on setting plays for his favourites.

Cavolo, didn't realise Webber ended up shooting 6/26. I was just going by what I saw on the night, and in the first half, I think you'll find he was the one who was hot and causing Sturt the most problems.

In the second half I did notice that he missed some shots, just didn't realise it was that many! He was still creating problems for Sturt though, because he had the defence scrambling time and again.

Sorry to disappoint king James but I play for a different club all together so wasn't supporting anyone - just along to check out the game. I must admit I didn't look at the sturt page on fiba stats as my friend and I couldn't believe the crap that was webber was jacking up. I tend to agree with thecomment that holmes went alone and I seem to remember that he had a lot of shots around the hoop, but let's be honest, holmes has never been known for his fg % ! ;P

I also agree with the comment about coaching, sturt did appear to run the same stuff and norwood seemed to be very proactive in making adjustments throughout the game so well done to the coaches.

Overall, just think webber threw up bad shots as I stated in my earlier post that's all, don't want to take anything away from norwood as I certainly think they deserved the win.

Interesting match up with Grantham on Ng if true. Would have thought he would be too ig and too slow to keep up with Darren.

The Grantham match up was great for Norwood because his extra height restricted Darren's shooting opportunities. On the other hand looking at the match up there should have been more movement and more screens - the D will break down eventuially.

Coopper did a good job on Holmes. It was great Sturt had so many young guys playing good minutes but their inexperience probably showed up on the night.

Norwood came out shooting well and overall were much better on the night.

In the women likewise - F'ville shot the lights out and the Mahony on Marino match up was a winner. Easily a better point guard and a much better defender. M Bowley was classy in her concession speech.

Glad to see two others note the Grantham-Ng duel as being key. Grantham kept to him pretty well. Ng still had some moments of brilliance, but didn't get a whole lot of open looks, especially from outside.

Playing Maynard or Daly with Bauer and Ng allowed the Flames to keep Grantham on Ng. I would've liked to have seen Flynn try a bigger line up that forced a mismatch at SF or for Matthews or Webber to play on Ng.

Good spread of performances from the Flames - Thompson, Krause, Grantham, Cooper, etc.
