Cairns won't re-sign Darnell Mee

Darnell Mee is looking to move on with the second stage of his basketball career after confirming he will not return to the Taipans this season.

Mee, now a naturalised Australian but arguably one of the best imports in NBL history, is likely to move into coaching after ending a 362-game NBL career with Canberra, Adelaide, Wollongong and Cairns.

Taipans coach Aaron Fearne confirmed this week the Snakes were likely to look to youth rather than re-sign Mee, a 38-year-old former NBA guard.
Who needs a veteran PG? Back-up Gibson at the Blaze? Support an import in Adelaide?

If he's willing to play for not much he'd a great to have around I would think. Would be good to have someone who could step up at the point in case Gilchrist turns out to be more jive than substance.

That said, Darnell looked old last season. Really old.

If he plays for close to the Minimum he would be great here. We wouldn't really need him to score but rather be a defensive presence. Even if he is getting a bit old he would still be valuable in limited minutes to back up Gilchrist.

Imagine point guards getting terrorised by Gilchrist for 7 minutes only to have Mee come on for the remaining 3 to guard them.

Also he is a fan favourite so that will help with the crowd.

bring him on board, can still be a productive player and would be great to see him finish his career as a Sixer

Would rather stick with Davidson as backup PG, or just run with Ng for 5mins given the 40min games.

If I had to choose between Mee and Davidson in a one-year deal, agreeing to the same money etc. I'd go for Mee 100 times out of 100.

I'd take Davidson 100 times out of 100 thanks. Darnell was finished years ago.

Darnell is done and dusted, he would be to slow and to likely to get injured 2nd game in. Davidson at this point is better, Ng, Burdon all look good for the future and even Hill can handle the ball. You could not justify a 38 yr old now in our new team

Would love him back here in a specialist/assistant role. His experience and hoop smarts would be a great thing to have passed onto our younger blokes.

Kman, he didnt look done and dusted when he blew past a flat footed 6er defence for his key sole fg at the dome for the 71-70 win!

Id love to get Darnell back for some key minutes off the bench. Ver valubale in the locker room and come finals time, he will do what he does best!

Scott Ninnis & Darnell are good friends and so I am sure if Ninnis could see value in it, then he would be here well ahead of davidson........

Nino, if I remember correctly he did nothing in that whole game until the last few seconds where his only score for the game was a game winner for his team. That is nothing solid to base your assessment of him as a valuable team player now. Especially so late in his career.

With shorter games, you'd only take Darnell at a budget price. And even then, the main reason I'd consider him would be for the impact it could have on ticket sales.

As a playing assistant? Maybe. Especially if the majority of his salary could be a coaches wage.

With very few genuine veterans left on the team, I think he would be of value, and probably a great person for Gilchrist to have around.

Yea i was thinking maybe he could be a playing assistant coach, coaching salary say 40k and playing salaray say 20k, wouldnt spend any more than that, and have him play around 15 mpg as a back up mostly pg but could fill time in the 2and 3 spots to slow down a scorer ala james harvey if needed.

He has made it clear that something in coaching is where he'd like to go next..

It will be very interesting if a certain Taipan with injuries last season is announced as a fresh signing now Mee is gone?

Agreed that Darnell would be awesome in an assistant role and maybe maybe as a minimum wage player but i just reckon his body would struggle at this stage. 38 is great have lasted so long, he would be cashed up so i reckon forget playing now and get into coaching.
