NBA Salary Cap Numbers released

Dr Evil has released the salary cap numbers for next season, and as expected the numbers have all been reduced.

There are now going to be some additional teams in strife.

Salary Cap: $57.7 million
Luxury Cap: $69.9 million
MLE: $5.85 million.

The majority of owners want to remain under the luxury cap. Teams already over are:

Boston
Dallas (Can get under by dropping Stack)
Lakers
New Orleans
Knicks
Phoenix
San Antonio
Utah
Washington

Teams that need to add players and are extremely close to the Luxury Cap are:

Cleveland: $69,280,965 (10 players under contract)
Denver: $69,326,776 (9 players)
Miami: $69,856,874 (11 players)
Orlando: $68,555,959 (8 players).

Minimum roster this season is 13. I can see a lot of minimum contracts coming.

Where does portland sit in the scheme of things TR?

If they need a few minimum salaries, could it be good for Patty Mills?

Portland has a tonne of room to move. I think it's only OKC that has more coin to spend then Portland.

Portland is at $47,345,768 but only 10 players under contract, and I think they wear Darius Miles $9 million this season as well.

There core of Aldridge, Roy, Odom, Batum and Fernandez are still on rookie contracts.

Mid-level exception.

Basically it's a salary that teams over the Salary Cap can use to sign players or by signed that player would put them over the cap. It can be spread over numerous players and doesn't have to be used.

It's what the Celtics used to sign Sheed Wallace.

Some teams also have the bi-annual exception which can only be used ever 2 years. Can also be split among more than one player, and can be used to sign players for up to two years, with raises limited to 8% per year. The bi-annual this year is $1.9 mill

Grant Hill could be offered the bi annual by the Knicks.

Most teams were actually predicting the cap would stay the same. Kind of screws up a lot of teams plans, e.g. teams right on the edge thought they would be okay, now a few minimum salary contracts will push them over.

And its not only the luxury tax the teams have to pay, its that they also miss out on the millions that are redistributed to the teams not in the luxury tax region. So its a massive hit to get about the luxury tax.

It's like an All-Star Cast of Horrible Contracts.

BTW, the league is telling teams to expect further reductions in the cap in the coming years. This is from ESPN just now:

The official league memorandum, obtained by ESPN.com, forecasts a dip in basketball-related income in the 2009-10 season of 2.5 percent to 5 percent, which threatens to take the 2010-11 cap down some $5 million to $8 million from last season's $58.7 million salary cap.

NBA Rumor Central

ESPN Insider has the updated buzz from the National Basketball Association rumor mill.
Story Insider

A significant drop for the luxury-tax threshold is also projected going into the summer of 2010. If basketball-related income drops by 2.5 percent in 2009-10, league officials are projecting a 2010-11 salary cap of $53.6 million and a luxury-tax line of $65 million. If BRI, as it is referred to in the NBA, decreases by five percent, teams would be looking at a $50.4 million salary cap and a luxury-tax line of $61.2 million in 2010-11.

"Teams should be aware of this projected BRI decrease," reads the memo, "and plan accordingly."

That is crazy... Dropping the cap by possibly 8 mil.

This adds a whole new slant to 2010.
