NBL 09/10 schedule released, starts Sep 24

The schedule for the 2009/10 National Basketball League (NBL) season has been released, with the eight-team competition set to tip-off on Thursday September 24.

The opening game of the season will see title hopefuls the New Zealand Breakers host the resurgent Cairns Taipans at the North Shore Events Centre.

Wollongong fans won't have to wait long to celebrate their emotional return to the court after what was thought to have been their last match ever last season. They host the Perth Wildcats on Friday 25 September.

Other opening round match-ups see a Queensland local derby at the Gold Coast Convention Centre between Gold Coast and Townsville on Friday 25 September and Cairns hosting Adelaide on Saturday 26 September.

Because the season would take to long. That would make the regular season go for 28 weeks!!!!!! Plus finals, all finals are a three game series so you want the season to go 34 weeks??? Idiot

I don't like the January schedule.

Wed 13th: Home against Cairns
Thu 14th: Jump on plane, land in humid Gold Coast airport, loose luggage, arrive late at hotel - no hot water
Fri 15th: Shuttle bus late for team collect for training session. Arrive at stadium, cheerleaders on court get priority. Play Gold Coast that night
Sat 16th: Jump on plane, travel halfway around Oz, land in Melb, loose luggage, shuttle bus to stadium for training, spend half an hour getting a park, play against Melbourne that night.
(The only good point is that Melbourne plays in Auckland Thursday night....)
then,
Sun17th: jump on plane and get back to Adelaide. Media film very tired team collecting bits of luggage from airport. Scotty with 3 day growth.
Tue or Wed: dust off pasport, jump on plane to Auckland, land at airport, loose luggage, get through customs search, shuttle bus late, hang around Auckland airport waiting, arrive late at hotel.
Thu 21st: quick trip to NSEC across the harbour for a train, return to the hostile crowd that night.
Fri 22nd: Shuttle bus to airport for the 6 am flight, back in Oz, jettlagged, media film tired players coming down escalator, scavenging through airport to find lost luggage, Scotty with 6 day growth giving interview
Sat 23rd: Team buggered!
Sun 24th: Rest day
Mon 25th: Normal training
Tue 26th: Quick Aussie day BBQ at airport, then fly to Melbourne.
Wed 27th: Play Melbourne
Thu 28th: Return to Adelaide
Fri 29th: Jump on Plane to Townsville
Sat 30th: Play Townsville
Sun 31st: Back to Adelaide
Mon 1st Feb: Team totally buggered! Scotty with full beard after forgetting to pack razor

Again apologies for idiot but it wasnt a well thought our question was it???

Regarding the season opening. The first game is in NZ so they dont care about AFL and the other game is at 7:30 in far north Queensland who dont care much for AFL and the game will be well and truely over.

Sigh @ Wednesday games. Unfortunately it's probably the only timeslot that Fox are willing to cover.

i've said it before and i'll probably have to say it again, you have to have mid-week, not just for Fox, but simply to fit the fixture in. You have to average over one game a week per team, which means four teams playing at home on the weekend cannot possibly give you enough games - most weeks you will need 6 games...so you have to (mathematically) go mid-week. Hence my argument for reducing the number of home games in a season.

Or in the case of the sixer 4 games in one week to fit into the schedule.

Had to happen but it's not a good draw for the Adelaide boys.

I also read in an ABC article that the will keep the name and branding from last year - so NBL it is.

My question is, WHAT THE F*CK HAS CHANGED????

Simplistic view Rod! The branding will probably change next year. And as for the name, what would you change it to?

This isn't the big reform year - they've made that abundantly clear.

As far as I am aware - the reason for keeping the name NBL, at this stage, is that they will line up a name in conjuction with the naming rights sponsor.
( Maybe like Australia Post Basketball - something along those lines - I THINK.)

Jack,

Wed 27th: Play Melbourne
Thu 28th: Return to Adelaide
Fri 29th: Jump on Plane to Townsville

I don't think they will return to Adelaide on Thur 28th. It would be more practical to go from Melbourne straight to Townsville and get an extra day to stretch their legs. The additional night accommodation would be covered by the one less airfare to come back to Adelaide from Melbourne first.

Julian, you could fit Seamus McPeake in the area to the right of the L.

DJ Rod, "The Big League" is not a good name.

so is it well known that NEXT year is the reform year?

if so, is that because of the late start of this season or other troubles with BA?

I apologise for the capital letter rant above but I always had thought this year was reform year...

Does anyone on here like the name THE BIG LEAGUE?

I am aware it is the name of a Rugby League Magazine but I doubt if that would be a problem.

If I'm the only one, I'll shelve it, but i've been on this bandwagon for a while :)

No wonder you and JR keep dissing the reform thus far on the show and it reflects in the sort of posts on his site in weeks gone by with dissing the crap out of BA- didn't everybody know it was little league (like little lunch and big lunch in school) and that they're not finished yet- not even close?
Damn maybe Rach and I should give blogging a shot! :)

So why were contracts made null & void?

Reply #238815 | Report this post

Because the interim season falls under the new criteria as per reform now that changes have been voted in and staggered implementations- new rules and regs.
The interim season can't fall under rules and regs or criteria of a format that is no longer current and in the past- therefore contracts need to reflect the same.

I guess because it was anticipated that this would be the reform year, and that it then turned into more of a two-year process.

Plus, changing the cap around (both the official and unofficial caps) may have necessitated the breaking of contracts.

I don't think the Big League name would work when you have fewer teams. Like I said on Twitter, it reminds me of that waterproof underwear ad for toddlers - "I'm a big boy now".

As Camel 31 has suggested and Paul has hinted at also, an govt-corp entity like Australia Post may be an option as naming rights sponsor and the naming of the competition may come heavily from that.

The ANZ Championship has launched very successfully with a similar naming scheme.

Might be a bit iffy, but BA could consider making a shortlist of 10 ideal naming rights sponsors - companies like LG, Sony, Panasonic, Honda, Dell. Talk to each and find out what it would take for them to consider naming rights sponsorship - whether that's a dirt cheap price, a certain composition of teams, crowd levels, TV coverage, etc. Then work towards specific targets.
