Should the New NBL Wait Until 2010/11?

Should the New NBL Wait Until 2010/11?

This may seems like a terrible idea to some, but just think about it. The Dragons, the 2008 NBL Champions, have now pulled out of a new league. There'll be no team in Sydney or Brisbane, and possibly none in Adelaide. All due to not being able to gather the funding in time. I know that the new NBL wants their teams to be financially viable, but it too short a notice for the teams and backers to gather the sort of funding that is needed.

It just seems like they are rushing things for the sake of having a league this year, and without 4 potentially great franchises in important markets, this new national league will look like a joke IMO. I'd rather go without a national league for a year and get one next year that has at least one team in all major state capitals from the word go, rather than this hastily assembled thing we're getting now.

Should they just wait and set themselves for a 2010/11 start, and get everyone on board, financially stable and all, from the word go?

No.

Is there a guarantee Sydney, Brisbane will get something together? They've had a year as it is and didn't get close to making a compliant bid.

Wait a year and you probably lose the likes Hawks & Cairns - two new teams starting completely fresh NOW.

Plus, how many other teams can afford a year of nothing?

Soccer had the Socceroos World Cup Qualifiers to keep local fans interested.

Then the World Cup itself was a MASSIVE launching pad for the A-League.

Basketball World Champs pale in comparison, despite the superstars that compete.

It'd take more than Boomers beating USA to get any hype from Australia's football dominated media ethos.

Well I just think that media interest is going to be next to nothing anyway, seeing as major markets like Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and (to an extent) Melbourne are going to be missing teams anyway. It just seems like a hastily thrown together mish-mash IMO.

It'd be better to get teams organised everywhere, or at least give them time to get organised everywhere. They haven't had a whole year to do this. The previous season ended around a month ago I thought, and while Sydney and so on knew their fate before then, it's still not enough time to organise a viable franchise for a national league.

I can see what will happen - markets that don't have a team in the league from the word go will probably just forget about having a basketball team at a national level, and never bother to get a franchise together.

If they just hold their horses, wait, and have a complete re-boot next year with strong, stable teams in all major markets, it'll be much more of a success that this thrown-together thing they're going ahead with, which only has two teams in major capital cities, and the rest in lesser markets. I didn't think Australian basketball could possibly make itself look more second-rate and irrelevant than it had six months ago, but this new league will just sink things to a new low IMO if it goes ahead as is.

Not a bad question, but the big question is can we afford not to have a 2009/10 season?

Reckon "Larry and the lounge lizards" in NBL HQ need the no-doze to get 'em through some all nighters!

If they can get teams in all major capital cities on board, financially viable, with some decent marketing (aka any marketing at all) behind them, and a league based around Australian talent (only one import per team), then I think not having a 2009/10 season is a worthwhile sacrifice to make for the benefit of the future of the game around the country.

it would destroy everything....if they didnt have a season. all the sponsors. staff etc would leave.

you would have to start every team from scratch next year.. not a good idea.

I totally agree, i suggest sitting out a year, then as conditions that all teams have only 1 import as this will promote/develope australian talent.

The problem is if they get it wrong now there may not be a second chance. Much better to hasten slowly and get the formula right for the next decade not the next year.
Basketball is in an awful mess, sponsors are edgy about investing in it and even cable TV which shows everything is not convinced we have a package worth showing.
Clean it up from the bottom up, make it truly National with each state represented, enforce audited salary caps , limit imports to one per team and reduce the player payments by half to reflect true market value.
Over pricing player worth has lead us to this chaotic place along with private ownership which just doesn't work in a minor sport so lets not charge into a hastily put together season, lets get it right.
If B A is to run and oversee the NBL then maybe state basketball associations need to be the owners of NBL franchises. Back to the future!

1 import = 1 less attraction....worst idea possible

2 imports = 2 much money + no one watching + no sponsors + no owners + no comp.
If you want to watch Americans watch Fox if you want a viable competition , watch Australians.

The answer to this question was always going to be yes, there was never enough time to get everything sorted and it was always going to be a case of being too rushed.
That was even before the Sixers and Dragons issue, and nothing has changed since then, except for the fact that delaying is overwhelmingly a necessary evil.
nobody will ever take this sport seriously again if the first season from when reform is announced, we desperately for our own selfishness, have a need to force it through before it's decent.
Doing that then trying to justify it is just laughable.

suppose 36ers and Tigers (just on the news) aren't in, does the league have a choice to not wait? In fact BA have failed miserably to have a team in state of each capital city.

it makes sense to cancel the upcoming season, get the model into place for a new launch.

It has to be right the first time with teams in all major capital cities.

We need to have a success similar to the A League and redevelopment of soccer.

By not having teams from syd or melbourne, this is not possible.

With the Tigers now out as well, SURELY they have to wait. Any national league would be a total joke if it's not including Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane or Adelaide.

There's no way they can sustain a league and expect it to be taken seriously with Perth, Cairns, Woolongong, Gold Coast, and who else?

I don't want a rebel league to start either, with the same old cowboys involved (Cowan etc.). I want a proper league that doesn't repeat the problems of the past.

With 6 teams, you would have really good teams.......play 20 rounds.

Play October to January.

Then the season can change after that to winter season.

A new league with no representation from Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne won't (or at least shouldn't) get off the ground.

The NBL needs to be left to die. Start afresh in 2010. This will ultimately be better for the game in Australia. Go back to a winter season and have the first season of the new, revamped league run through winter 2010. This will give BA and the clubs time to go back to the table and sort their issues out.

One import only in the standard tier, two imports in the elite tier?

Reply #234928 | Report this post

What about have the choice of having one import - outside of the salary cap or 2 within the salary cap.
