Breakers sign Alex Pledger to dev spot

Not much in the way of NBL news right now as it applies to player recruitment, so we'll take whatever we can get.

One instance is the signing of Alex Pledger by the NZ Breakers to their second development spot. The first spot is held by young scorer Corey Webster.

Pledger is returning from three years at college and is 7'1" and 22 years old. He'll suit the rest of the NZ NBL season with the Waikato Pistons, a team which stars Adelaide 36er Adam Ballinger.

"He's a long seven-footer and quite athletic," Breakers assistant and Waikato coach Dean Vickerman said of Pledger. "He's a very good defensive rebounder and also has a good touch.

"Along with Thomas Abercrombie and Corey Webster, Alex is a young guy who we believe can do some good things for both the Breakers and Tall Blacks over the next 10 years."
Not much to go on in terms of college stats - not sure if Pledger was injured or unplayed for much of his college career.

The full article mentions that the Breakers will retain Bruton, Penney, Boucher, Forman and Abercrombie while waiting on news of the points cap before determining whether they have space for veterans Ronaldson and Jones, and import Rickert.

Definately no room for Bradshaw to head back there now- good thing he's lately decided he doesn't want to come back and wants to spend the next few seasons in Europe.

At least we have one club still positive about the long term future!

Whats actually good here is that they are positive and pro-active....
early bird catches the worm!
They were close last year and to be honest i reckon they can go even closer this season...or whenever the season is....

Stoked they are retaining Abercrombie and Foreman along with Bruton and Penney. Surely Phill Jones will squeeze into the points cap somewhere being a longtime loyal Breaker

Abercrombie will get alot more minutes next year. Expect him to be the 2/3rd option off the bench behind Jones.

The big issues will be the points cap and the game shifting to 40 minutes. It's hard for them to move too much until they know what the cap will be.

Unless this has changed very recently it's still 68.

And the only players they have said they will look to have made amendments to individual player ratings is those that are the (reluctant) product of defunct clubs who can no longer have a reduction for years of service.

Are ratings from existing contracts maintained?

My understanding is yes- nothing has been said about it- all that was said was in reference to defunct clubs' players getting leniency.
