Funny 36ERS stop Bullets for third straight win
The 36ERS have tonight reeled in the Brisbane Bullets at home, erasing a 16-point deficit to finish four point winners. Import Willie Farley was spellbinding with his all-round efforts on court, amassing 37 points to lead Adelaide. Returning from injury, Brett Maher poured in 13 final quarter points to end on 24 which included a superb 14 of 14 free throws.
It was too much for Brisbane to stop in the second half as Simon Kerle and Mick Hill fouled out of the game, and Bryant Matthews and Bobby Brannen came within a single foul each of doing the same.
Adelaide were slow out of the blocks, at one point falling behind 9-25 in the opening period and looking almost completely lost. Two starters failed to lodge a first quarter score and Brisbane were making baskets easily in the paint -- Brannen with 10 points.
In the second term, Farley continued on his way and appeared to gain energy with each successive basket. Jacob Holmes, finishing the game with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds had 7 in the quarter as Adelaide outscored their opponents 27-17.
Statistically, the game was very even at the main break, the 36ERS down by 5 and a single rebound and turnover separated the teams on the half-time boxscore.
After that, however, the Bullets appeared lucky to stay in the game courtesy of Stephen Black's shooting. Farley knocked in 16 points in the third and openly taunted his defender after each successful basket.
Dusty Rychart fouled out uncharacteristically, but not before recording 11 points and 14 rebounds -- the 36ERs still on court, though, held on for a win not entirely decided until the final seconds. Maher's free throws, scores from Holmes and Farley as well as David Cooper's crucial blocks realised the narrow victory. Cooper had his most shot attempts as a Sixer and was a point shy of equaling his season best with 12 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks in the game.
The home win is the third straight for Adelaide, leaving them a final opportunity against the Taipans in Cairns next round. Meanwhile, the Bullets have lost their third game running.
