Game Night Take 2: Crocs

Well, last night's 3rd qtr was the worst all year and maybe the worst qtr for a long time.
Tonight the boys back up for Take 2 in the FNQ double.
The Crocs are a fairly physical team and at home may be hard to overcome. Hinder is one of those guys who you just don't know what he's going to do in a dark alley.

But, I wouldn't put a W against the Crocs just yet....

Will we be able to bounce back, or should the boys just stay in Cairns and go fishing?

If Luke isn't 100%, should we have taken Hobbo up just in case?

Crocs arent tht great a team, and I couldnt imagine the 36ers playing a worse quarter than that 'history making' 5point haul. Luke needs to be getting 15+ shots up and thats just simple basketball. When he gets the ball, he makes shots, draws extra defense and simply gets fouled other times before he is allowed to make a move. What does all this mean? He makes good things happen. Grizzard should play more minutes tonight, this Crocs team isnt that tall and dont have that many consistant weapons. Watch for cedar, had a shocker against the Breakers but can burn you, seemingly from nowhere! Ellis could be good for us, forces up shots and is horribly undersized, hopefully he attemtps to go to work a bit tonigt, because he wont have much success against our big bigs! Get the job done boys and come home, enough of of this road BS, be professionals and give the Adelaide fans what they deserve.

Im backing them, 36ers by 10+

A lot depends on Schensch's health, I'm genuinely worried about this one and I don't think Grizz is the answer just yet either - a few more trainings are needed there.

The 6ers are currently stuck in Cairns - trouble with flights - i assume it would have something to do with the amount of rain we have had - 500ml in 3 days up towards Cairns!

Wow Rod, that's big news! I wouldn't mind if the game was postponed until Schensch and Winitana are healthy and Grizz settles in.

If the Townsville guards are hittign their outside shots then the 36ers will have a tough battle - our guards have struggled to defend in that situation for the last 5 years and this year is better but we still have problems doing it effectively and for a whole game.

I think Bruce has to play more minutes (stay out of foul trouble) as I feel he's been pretty good (and maybe the best - interested in what others may think there) at getting the ball to Schenscher in scoring positions (in the 3 games I've seen this year). If that happens, we're looking good.

Whatever happens, play hard and play for 48 minutes guys. I'll be following the play by play and cheering you on for the win. Go 6ers!

Oh crap!
The last thing we need if for the guys to be caught in Cairns. What would happen in that situation? Reshedule or forfeit? They may be playing Sun afternoon.

Yes, this is the danger game. Their minds would not be in a clear place at the moment.

6ers are going to get beat bad tonight. Whoever said Crocs are crap need to really have a long look at themselves. The two game road trip that 6ers are on is equivalent to the return trip that the crocs have made from NZ. Not sure if the 6ers are steady with gizz yet it will take time for it to start clicking.

Sorry 6ers fans Crocs by 20 .....

last nights result really stuffed up us for a top 4 finish.

i was looking at the fixture of both Perth and 36ers for the remainder of the season (i dont think the Crocs will get 4th...if they do, they'll have the same amount of wins as us which means we will get 4th), and it was going to come down to the game in 3 weeks time between us and the Wildcats here at the dome. The winner of that game was most likely to finish 4th.

now we will need to manage to only drop 1 game and rely on perth dropping 2 or 3 - which i cant see happening as they have a pretty light run home.

but ya never know.

lets hope we keep winning and getting in good form in the lead up to the finals - and hope the perth lose a couple of games they are expected to win so we can grab a top 4 spot!

Townsville have 51 points from the guard positions (including Williamson) and 36ers have 29 points from teh guards (not including Grizzard).

Same guards for Townsville have taken 16 foul shots to 36ers guards' Williams has taken 8, so their guards are probably getting to the basket better than ours, although Maher's assists may indicate otherwise.

For me, this is the same problem teh 36ers always have against teams that shoot the ball well from outside. As flagged above, we just are not effective defending the perimeter. That will not be a problem against streaky teams that run hot and cold but will get you killed against teams that shoot reliably from there - like the Breakers.

Let's hope the Crocodiles' shooters go cold in the second half and we can stop the turnovers. Go 6ers!

Was remembering old times today, and came across an old Hoops SA thread from the 08/09 season when we won the championship. Turns out we were down 75 to 57 against the Crocs at half time, with live audio dodgy as and the FIBA scores being temperamental.

Anyway, staged the greatest comeback in basketball memory to beat the Crocs and went on to destroy both the Tigers and the Dragons in the best final series the country has ever seen. Good times".

From the stats i see, we are letting teams dictate to us how THEY want to play. We played in a low scoring ugly style game last night and got beaten with the winning score being 79, yet tonight the Crocs want to play uptempo, so we allow that and give up 75 in a half! Are you freakin serious, good thing basketball isnt that big in australia, because i could imagine the espn type analytical shows having a field day with the way the 36ers play. They'll need a solid run before the break or it's over.

Look to Davidson to hit the 3 or Maher to come alive. Hill has been quiet since his big opening. Ranga towers starting to fire up. Crocs still playing well.

It seems the Crocs have a licence to shoot..... I wanna play for them!

The are shooting the $%#@ out of it, all it will take is 5-6 missed shots and 4-5 good scores and the Crocs will get nervous...

Keep feeding it to Schensch!

I know that Ninnis wants to play Brett in a SG role, but seriously he is the only PG that doesn't give the ball to the opposition! Bruce will be a great PG when he has more experience, but you can tell when he's having an off night and needs to be switched. Even Davidson's gone for 3 TO's so far!

Our point guards are getting lotsa turnovers against their half court trap which Townsville played all the first quarter, and intermittedly since.

That's probably more a team offence set up issue, rather than a lack of point guard skill.

Put down the glasses, this one's over. 36ers now need to work on keeping Townsville to under 30 for at least one quarter of the game.

After this poor defensive display, the Blaze's outside shooters will be hoping they can turn it on like they did when they played us earlier this season. If they can, they'll fancy their chances of cracking it for another win.

So the 36ers have to get the defence working effectively in this last quarter.

I just don't get it. I understand Maher is limited by doctor's orders to approx 28 mins per game and Davidson is coming back from some serious injuries...but we're being humiliated.

Looking forward, the season split with teh Spirit looks really important. I think we have that don't we?

Rest of season (after tonight, when 36ers and Spirit both will have lost), Spirit play Taipans twice, Wildcats twice, Blaze and Breakers. We play Blaze, Wildcats, Breakers, Dragons, Hawks.

Based on tonight, I would expect neither team to finish better than 14-16 and there's a real risk either could finish 13-17. If that happens, the Hawks might still get up over both!

I put my faith in Grizzard fitting in better after this weekend. We did pretty poorly in the first 2 games when Hodge joined the team this season and did better as the team adapted to him. I think we'll see the same happen with Grizzard, except I think it's more a case of him adapting to the team, in this case.

Very bad results from the weekend and don't want to point the finger and blame people.

BUT how much is the players and how much is the coaches fault? Everyone last year went on about the coach cause they felt they needed the change. This year everyone is blaming the players.

In all seriousness, should it be 50% responsibility? I'm asking advice from knowledgeable basketball people here.

Did we lost due to rotations, poor time outs, bad systems or bad shots, etc.

Why say you are happy about something when its obvious that you can't possibly be happy about what is happening. I am a passionate supporter of the 36ers as much as anyone on this forum. I have missed 2 home games in 7 years and attended dozens interstate in that time. I would say its this passion that causes losses like this to hit harder.

I've been a staunch Ninnis supporter from day one, but I'm starting to believe he's partly to blame (and I'm not quick to jump bandwagons). One reason being someone mentioned his constantly mixed signals to Holmes.

Scotty aside, I'm leaning towards players. Ninnis didn't score 5 in a quarter against the Taipans. Scotty didn't turn the ball over 19 times against the Crocs - they're not coaching decisions - they're skill errors.

The rotations may be partially to blame, but the Sixers are letting themselves down.

To be fair, it's been an incredibly trying 2 weeks, emotionally and mentallt for them. Our stability has been all over the place. Thankfully, we managed to defenc our house twice before this weekend's "Sunshine Swing Massacre".

We'll make the finals. Just remains to be seen which Sixers outfit turns up.

This weekend has been a pathetic effort! Its time for Ninnis to make some changes to the team! Its time for Bruce the hero to hit the bench and the beloved Holmes also!

I know you all love Mal but thanks Mal for not paying Hodge on time and now we have to put up with us losing by 23 to Towsnville and 9 to Cairns who have the shitest team in the league.

Okay my comments last night were a bit harsh due to being drunk and mad at another terrible loss. However, most of the things I said still apply but just not as rudely :P

We are on the verge of having a terrible season with a very talented team.

I still think we have the ability to make a run at the finals but the defensive problems we have had all season need to be fixed!

Also the rotations need to be fixed. We can't continue to sub players in and out like a Ice Hockey game! We can't try to have 10 players have lots of minutes to make everyone happy. Need to focus on just 8 with the 9th player getting a few minutes if required. If this means Winitana gets no minutes then so be it.

Finally Grizzard must be called upon to produce! We don't need another passenger! Run plays for him and post him up.

Woeful effort but I cant wonder that this is the same pattern all year. I feel players should not be left to relax before or during the game, they need to be switched onn mentally at least 2 hours out with intensity lifting in the last hour. Defensive problems all year and players not responding. Tiredness not a factor because if you cant run out 2 games in a row you should be in this league .
This Adelaide historical away problem is above the shoulders, nothing to do with coaching staff who are fantastic, this is an adelaide culture that has 5 games to change. If I was scott I would not give these boys one minute of relaxation until after the season to keep them focused.
If this side could play to its potential above the shoulders with urgency and professionalism then it is a top 3 side.
You have to give to Hodge he may not have trained but he was always ready mentally to play because of the US culture. He scored home and away

turnovers stats not good enough, our points need to be more aggressive at the player defending them waty too closely

Agree Stuart
This team has all the tools to be a very good team possibly a great one. For mine it is all in the application.

The coach can't make or miss shots, create turnovers or crash the boards. It is up to the players come game time to do their job.

FWIW, here's something from a Crocs fan (mattic, from OzHoops) who was at the game:

When bruce made a soft foul early on, I noticed Maher give him a serve. It was a decent serve, too, so I suspect that bruce's head hadn't been right at training and warm-ups, too. When Schenscher did get the ball in any space at all, he usually scored. But it seemed that getting to him as he was gets the ball really upsets his rhythm.

It was a strange old game, really. The 36ers scored plenty of points, despite my feeling that the Crocs defence was good for most of the match. They scored 30 in the first quarter, so something was going right. I think it was just a case of the Crocs getting everything right on the night and learning from what happened to them the last time they played in Adelaide.

Isaac, from mattic's comments, do you think it was a one off game that Townsville played particularly well and that there is still hope for the 36ers to salvage the rest of the season? Should it be put down to bad luck on the night and focus on what's left? If that's the case atleast its promising however the previous night's loss to a team of inferior quality really puts a spanner in the works. Cairns don't even have their head coach and are playing under assistants. From a real high before the Cairns game sitting in 4th position with the attractiveness of a home playoff game, 2 games later have become a battle to even make the playoffs. That would be a real shame for the supporters and the club itself. No doubt this season has cost the club a fortune in changes in imports and also injuries yet possibly not making playoffs. I personally think the club has not recruited well this season. Tyndale straight out of college was a huge mistake when an import is supposed to dominate. Potsie must have had rocks in his head to give him a no cut contract (although blame has to rest on others as well for not picking it up). Bruce has not proven to be the choice pick up as expected. His season has been very ordinary. Winitana whilst exciting after watching him in the pre season, does not have a record of being a stand out player so I don't know what the 36ers thought they were getting. Davidson, whilst having a few good games this season, has not really had much impact. He started this season with injury and as a result spent much of the time sidelined. Jacob Holmes was a better player 3 years ago before he left Adelaide and needs to add more to the scoring. The only real positives have been Ballinger (we already had him), Schenscher and Hill has made a remarkable improvement. Brett Maher has been on the decline as far as his input to the game goes but still remains as a remarkable leader and disciplinarian on the floor. Cooper has been a waste of a bench seat. He always looks to me when he goes on court as being shackled.

From mattic and DJRod, I got the impression that Adelaide recovered from the opening Crocs blitz and then were fended off whenever they made a run. Like I said, the Crocs did this against NZ in Auckland as well.

I think Adelaide recruited well. Maher has been as expected, Bruce has been decent considering he's a rookie in the NBL, Hill has really improved, Tyndale was just a bit haphazard in the end but had his moments, Winitana has been fine for a 10th man, and Schenscher was a big pick-up, and Holmes is obviously just struggling a bit with variations to his role. Hard to judge Cooper and Davidson on brief and inconsistent minutes.

Before Bruce became an option, it appeared that the option was to start Davidson and back him up with Kersten (and a bit of Maher, I guess). Based on the previous years from both, the might've seemed feasible but injuries and more have to make you wonder how that would've gone. Makes me think they recruited well in Bruce.

I reckon start Grizzard at SF, play him bulk minutes and let him go to town.
