Tassie NBL Hopes?

What does everyone think about Tasmania entering the NBL in the upcoming years?

in the past Tasmania had two national league sides one in the NBL one in the WNBL both folded in the current economic crisis I can't see it being viable to field a side again if they failed to attract the crowds in the past.

Agree. They have an ABA Team.(or 2 i think-Launceston and Hobart). That is enough. An NBL requires good crowd levels, good media coverage etc. Tasmania does not have the ability to field an NBL team.

What a disgraceful comment. I'm from melbourne but think that there should be no question in Tasmania having a team. Currently teams are averaging like 3,000 or less to a game. Do you not beleive that Tasmania could not equal that or do better. If the NBL wants there reform process to be taken seriously than the should not follow the AFL and the A league to the smae markets but actually try and set a trend! Tasmania has been yearning for the own professional team in almost every sporting code! so why not be the first to give them this.

Tasmania's population is over 500,000! If 169,484. Where is the logic in saying that Tasmania is to small when on of the most sucessful teams has significantly less. Secondly it's not as if we would be battling for attention in Tasmania with other sporting codes! It would be just us which would also bring the benifit of enormous media attention! Tasmania defintely could and should have their own team. Why not do something different than try to break into old markets where we struggle to get attention?

well if you have a look at Bball now nothing !!!! is sucessful. The fact that this is a totally new time and once again t would be new ground as no other sport has or is trying to get into the market.

Hayden,
To run an NBL club, the budget seems to be around $3M.

The state domestic product of Tassie is around $20,000M. WA is around $146,000M.

While the passion may be there from the supporters, the club would need a substantional sponsorship to survive. Gunns?

If you could persuade Princess Mary to support the team financially, you're on a winner

The occasional game that has been played in Tasmania I believe has been very well attended even though they don't have their own team competing. The same goes with the occasional game of Football. This suggests that Tasmanians would like a national sporting team of their own to follow. There is still junior basketball that in itself brings an awareness to basketball. As far as sponsorship goes, as Hayden said, there is no other national sporting codes there so why wouldn't they get sponsorship. With a population of over 500,000 thats more than the Gold Coast and Townsville and they both field an NBL team. With the right owner, I think a team in Tasmania could do well.

Tassie has 2 mens ABL teams, the North West Thunder and Hobart. They would have the money to enter with Tasmanian Seafoods. The Trouble is that every time that they tried to re-entre with a good bussiness plan the league has not wanted rhem. There is no doubt that as far as Coaches and players that are currently or previously been involved in the NBL and ABL the state has the talent to field a team. If they show that they can stay a float. Well we want a National Comp don't we?

The problem in the past with the NBL in Tassie is that they've located the team in Hobart. The basketball population is much larger and stronger in the north of the state.
The problem is that Hobart is an insecure capital city who are already jealous about the Hawks ALF games being played in Launceston. They'll fight tooth and nail to get any proposed team down south and it'd go belly up again.

There have been 3 NBL sides - Launceston, Devonport and then Hobart. L'ton won a title and all three failed to survive. The ABA sides struggle financially so there is no way an NBL side would survive at the moment. In saying that if every NBL game is televised live what sponsorship opportunities will that open in all states?
