36ers crowd could be even louder

Obviously, the crowd has been fantastic this year at 6ers games, but it could always be better. Here are a few things that I think we as a crowd should start to do regularly, to improve the atmosphere and distract/demoralise opposition players:

Yell "THREEEEEEEE" when a Sixer takes a 3pt shot. (After it leaves his hand of course, so qere not distracting him.

Throw a hand up when an opposition player shoots a jumper, just as if we are closing-out on them ourselves. -This is done at many college stadiums and is really puts some pressure on the shooter.

Start player chants as we once did for Dave Barlow. Eg. 'WOOORTHOOOOO', 'HAAAMEEER', 'HIIIINDEEEER', 'HOOOMIIICIIIDE','SAAAVIIILLE' and, of course, this Saturday...'BAAAAARLOOOOOW'.

Crowd-initiated taunts at the refs. eg. "you suck, clap clap clap, you suck, clap clap clap" (without the music)

New distractions for free-throw shooters eg. everyone whistling or waving arms.

Skip or Bonz if you're reading this maybe you could help start some of these things.

Any other ideas, guys?

Lighten up Woody!

I agree with XztatiK; we need to ramp it up.

I think there are some great ideas in the original post. One thing I can say is that having been to every season since the last one at Apollo the crowd has become subdued.

I would love to see Murray come out at half time like the Townsville Croc used to; dressed as one of the refs but with a white cane and dark glasses, tripping and bumping into everything. GOLD!

Won't someone please think of the children!

I remember when the Powerhouse used to be referred to as a 'zoo.' Now its just so very, very polite.

I grew up going to Apollo in the days when the basketball crowd wasn't so 'family friendly' and it didn't exactly dement me.

Considering the amount of old people and children, it's not surprising. People turn around and look if I shout anything at the opposition, even though I don't use offensive language.

Yeah the crowd do make you feel like a jerk for yelling any real support! I used to get the goose bumps after the national anthem when a few yobbo type would yell 'c'mon 6ers' felt like it was officially GAME TIME!

Oh and I really wish the crowd had gotten into Saville ALOT more after his brain implosion and that tech.

Hey, good work on the music Saturday night btw. Was especially sweet when you played something loud on a key Hawks possession near the end, and then cut it when we got the ball back and the crowd took over.

Only think I would say is that some of the one-shot samples/quips you use get are pretty hard to hear - so maybe make 'em louder or leave em. I lolled at the organ music during one of the extended umpiring conferences...

Yeah Skip's doing a good job with the music. It fits the game rather than being overbearing as it was a couple of seasons ago.

As a sample for an opposition play, how about using those 2 old guys from the Muppets? i.e. "I didn't like it...that was terrible! boo!"

On that note, are there any guidelines as to how often you're allowed to play sounds that mock the opposing team?

Also, I agree with Nino. We need people to just really get stuck into the opposing players if they deserve it. Coarse language obviously isn't necessary, as everyone's there to enjoy the game, but the worse you can make the opposition feel, the better. At one point I yelled at Saville "That was worst than your Olympic performance", but I was a lone voice =(

I still think the best music to play when the refs are having a conference or the play is held up for some reason is the Benny Hill Theme.

Its an oldie but a goody.

Still cracks me up after 30 years.

Give the children a voice. What Australian kid wouldn't want the freedom to yell, "sit your bald arse down you Boomer clown" at Goorj?

Thinking music from Jeopardy sounds good for thinking music.

Also the old British chase music, I think it is on the Simpsons, in one of the episodes when the movement is just photos every couple seconds.

I think the best payout i ever heard towards an opposition player at the basketball was a few weeks ago when some dude who sits behind the South Dragons bench called out heaps loud to Dremel Darden "You're Average Darden" ZING!!!, im sure he's still smarting about that one

For those of you that can't work out the lame post by AndyOG, he was trying to be sarcastic.

Darden is an average player and is probably the worst import in the league. Yes even worse then Tydnale! I'm sure Darden wouldn't have liked to hear him being called average when he just got subbed off for being shit. What would you have said to him? Let me guess something lame like "Darden you will never play at the garden!" haha because that would really upset him plus have him crying as well as the crowd laughing. Any comment towards a players ability they will take some sort of offence to. There is no requirement that a comment towards a player needs to be funny. At the end of the day any comment is better then sitting there like a blob and not showing your support like you do ;) Perhaps you should go sit in the corner with the Grannys that don't seem to like the noise like others have suggested :P

In the Apollo days, everyone was on the same page. You had to love to game to gain entry, & we all spoke our minds. In my view, the downturn of the 36er fortunes, came from building a world class stadium & being dictated to by the, we'll "ring up for our tickets" & bring the children brigade.
Big change of attitude is required. Ring in for your tickets by all means, but let everyone else enjoy the game (including your kids).

I saw a great thing on youtube a few months ago where the people behind the basket all had their hands in the air and were moving around in unison as if they were on a rollercoaster.
It would require someone down the front for everyone to mimick (Murray Maybe) but would also require a lot more people behind the basket.

I will look it up on youtube again when I get home.

Oh Ok KingJames so you reckon that saying something as bland as "You're Average Darden" will really get under a professional basketballers skin?, are you serious?. That would like like screaming out to a politican that he's a liar, and expecting him to react, its water off a ducks back on both counts.

You said above "Any comment towards a players ability they will take some sort of offence to. There is no requirement that a comment towards a player needs to be funny."

First of all, you are right!, "You're Average Darden" isn't the slightest bit funny. The definition of ridicule is "Words or actions intended to evoke contemptuous laughter at or feelings toward a person or thing", so yeah you pretty much tripped at the first hurdle in your argument there pal

Reply #214653 | Report this post

Years ago

AndyOG You say I am wrong because you feel a ridicule is meant to have some sort of laughter in it however you then put a dictionary meaning in it that indicates a ridicule DOES NOT have to evoke laughter. Please get a decent argument together next time instead of making your self look like a fool ;)

Look at all the post on here of what people say in games none is really that funny. Also in games barely ever are there any funny comments directly towards players in the hope of putting them off their game. Comedy is not a requirement. If someone can say something that is funny as well as help to put off a player then that is a bonus but it is usually unlikely. In your definition "Darden you smell funny" would be so much more demoralising! It is not the school yard!

As I said, when he just got subbed off for playing sh*t and he knows he is under pressure to perform (as he is about to get sacked) and has players insulting his abilities then that will put more pressure on him. It doesn't matter how bland it is. Even if you were subbed off in a basketball game and someone behind you told you, you were average that would annoy you. Also if a politician was speaking in public and you kept on referring to him that he is a liar it would annoy him also.

Please explain how "Darden you will never play in the Garden!" is funny and would upset him and put him off his game?

As I said before any comments or support is better then sitting there like a blob and showing no support at all!

Your agument is diet cordial weak at best KJ, you and I are NOT talking about group taunting, we are talking about ridcule of an individaul athlete as they hed to the bench. Everyone knows that the BEST insults directed at a sportsperson evoke laughter and are said in good spirit. Its the Australian way. No-one appreciates unfunny or bland comments from the crowd (why would they?), and, as i explained above the player is 95 per cent oblivious to it, water of a ducks back!!.

True, to taunt a sportsperson and get under their skin you don't have to be funny, like when David Beckham was told by fans a few years ago that "they hope his son gets cancer", it wasn't the slightest bit funny, but im sure that would have cut to the bone for Golden Balls.

So your argument that any comment or support is better than sitting there "like a blob" is incorrect, if you haven't got anything clever to say KingJames, then maybe you should not say anything at all :p

Both of you two little children stop arguing, the best thing to get under a players skin is to be sitting behind the opposition bench and at every opportunity heckle aggressively, try to get them to take the bait. The crowd in unisen like the old days "umpires a wa_ker clap , clap " was sweet maybe Anstey is a tosser could upset him. Anyway we can get the atmosphere like the last 4 mins of saturdays game would be awesome.

I loved it when we went to see the 36ers play the Tigers in Melbourne years ago. Every time Bradke blocked a shot, the courtside announcer would say, "And Bradke Says" and the crowd would yell out "NO". Or something like that!

It would be a very quiet dome if everyone had that attitude.

Things like "Maybe Anstey should play PG, Barlow", "Off to Hindley street tonight Hoare?", "South didn't want you anyway, Ebi", "Salary-saver! (Adrien Sturt)", "Don't be afraid of the paint Corletto, it won't bite"... are good.

My favourite was still when the Bullets came to town last year and Bruton lobbed a full court pass and it went straight out of court.

One of the guys behind me yelled out "You can't pass to your Ego CJ!"

Or as I developed at the last Dragons game: "Wortho Originals". Just need a giant carboard cutout of a Werther's Original bag and then a giant blowup of Wortho crying at last years grand final loss to Melbourne stuck on the front.

Everytime he throws an Elbow or gets a call; you wave the bag at him.

XztatiK I remember back a few years ago two guys near me got asked to leave the stadium because of their Hoare comments.

The comments were bloody funny (I thought) but a former board member sitting near by took offense to them and had them thrown out.

Every time he was on the court they yelled out stuff like;

Your Mums a Hoare
Your dads a Hoare
even your dogs a Hoare.

Crude? Yes. True? Absolutely.

If you're so overwhelmed by the crudity of their chant, that you can't see the funny side, then you're a soft cock.

If Steve hit the floor injured & they yelled, "stay down you c**k-s**k'n Hoare", then yeah, that could be seen as offensive. Their chant was clever & fun, so get over yourself.

I admit..i whistled DAMN LOUD...but thats it, A stadium full of cats fans (4000 maybe?) but me whistling during their free throws..or congratulating a successful 36ers move...was enough to be threatened with eviction.

Perhaps all of the comments above are part of the reason for the falling interest...bring your rug, thermos of tea...and politely clap when told.
