Lightning defeat AIS

In the final game for the 2004/05 Price Attack Women's National Basketball League season, the Adelaide Quit Lightning defeated the Australian Institute Sport 95-77 at the Mt. Barker Sports Stadium in Adelaide on Sunday.

Laura Summerton top scored with 30 points, including 15 in the first quarter, with Jenna O'Hea top scoring for the visitors with 16.

Jenny Screen backed up with 27 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists, Erin Phillips also coming close to a triple double, with 10 points, eight rebounds and 12 assists.

Adelaide opened strongly, Summerton making an early basket, and also combining with Erin Phillips to draw out to an early four point lead. Jenna O'Hea making a strong contribution for the students, ensuring they kept up with the Lightning, even drawing level halfway through the term.

Adelaide then went on an 11-0 run, Summerton scoring eight of those on her own, on her way to 15 first quarter points. Renae Camino started to also find the basket for AIS, however Adelaide already held a commanding first quarter lead 31-22, with Summerton on 15 and O'Hea on eight.

Summerton continued her dominance to start the second quarter, scoring the first five points, including a three point shot, Erin Seward also adding another two, before the AIS could score, with the clock showing 7:34 left in the term, Rebecca Duke making the basket.

Adelaide launched yet another offensive run, scoring nine unanswered points, mainly through the hands of Jenny Screen, the Lightning jumping out to a commanding 22 point lead, Camino once again stepping up towards the end of the period with a quick five points, Caitlin Cunnigham scoring a basket right on the buzzer to reduce the lead to 19 points, Adelaide going into the main break ahead 51-36, Summerton on 20 points, and O'Hea on 10.

Adelaide were shooting an impressive 52% from the floor, the AIS somewhat struggling with unfamiliar surrounds with a 34% return.

The third quarter was a very level affair, the Institute managing to outscore Adelaide 27-25 for the term, with O'Hea and Cunnigham being the main contributors. Adelaide threatened to blow the game out when with 6:27 left for the period, Screen hit a triple, Kamala Lamshed also hitting a triple for the home team on the next play, taking the score to 65-47. Mikaela Dombkins hit a triple of her own, and when Camino found the basket again, the AIS went into to final break with all the momentum, but still down 76-63.

Laura Summerton went into the final break on 26 points, O'Hea still leading AIS with 14. Screen had 20 points, 8 rebounds and seven assists, and Phillips was also flirting with a triple double with eight points, seven rebounds and 11 assists.

Ensuring they keep in rhythm for next weeks finals, Adelaide did not let up in the final quarter. Buoyed by a 10-2 opening run to the term, the Lightning broke the lead out 21 before Cunnigham could stop the run with a basket for the AIS. The AIS certainly did not let things drop either, their tough defence forcing Adelaide into a shot clock violation, but then Screen stepped up yet again, scoring five unanswered points.

With 3:44 left to play in the game, Adelaide coach Chris Lucas obviously started thinking about next week, taking all his starters except for Erin Seward off the court. Both teams enjoyed the break, seldom used Amanda Williams hitting a triple, and the AIS players all enjoying a more open look at the basket, as they piled on eight points in the last two minutes to narrow the gap, with the final score being 95-77.

Adelaide now move into the finals series, to play the Sydney Flames in Sydney, and the AIS take a break as they regroup with their next intake, including a new coach, with Phil Brown stepping down as head coach.
