What do you think of the boys, any favourites amongst them and what do you mean some odd picks with the girls?
why so many from Q are they really good? Why kids leaving AIS after couple of months?who is deciding for schoolarship that's why basketball in Australia going backwards. Shame

The boys aren't leaving after a few months they stayed the whole year. I heard they were homesick. Victoria won the 20's and 18's this year and the 16's and 18's last year and can only get three scholarships? Are QLD that good, who knows we'll see? Still a very good squad though. The majority are still there and they made the SEABL finals last season so will be a year older and better next year.

Here are some of my thoughts, AIS is not the only way to go, with all due respect Vic metro could send 2 competative teams to the nationals for each age group. Vic Country are very good until the footy clubs get them. Get your grades up ,stay at home, get a school scholarship (chose your own coach), play youth league under 23(a good standard of amateur basketball ), spend the high cost of going on overseas AIS tournaments on individual skills / strength / coordination / flexibility training.
Interesting

William smart advice. Just ask newley, ingles, bogut, mills etc. or most of the Div 1 colleges whether kids should go to the institute or not. ummmm... It depends what they want to do but if they want a future in basketball then they should go!

Totally agree with interesting. My thoughts are just ask any player if they were offered a scholarship would they go? I'm sure all of them would say a definate yes. It's not for everyone and that's fair enough. Also the players who go on any overseas tours with the AIS do not pay to go.
kindze
Years ago
Ask John Marriot why he did not go.Information for Astor kids had to pay Guam tournament $1400 and every single overseas trip about $2000 during the schoolarship in AIS.
Why James Orr left AIS than what is going on with big Jordan.Politics mate you do not have a idea.
End of the day is who do you know in AIS that's why basketball in this country going rapidly backwards.

James Orr left scholarship because he was homesick and schooling wasn't to his liking. He left Haileybury which is no comparison to the school the players go to in Canberra Big Jordan wasn't happy and struggled up there and that's fair enough. Yes kids that went to Guam had to pay but all other Emus and AIS tours to Germany, Chinese Taipei and Italy were paid for and none of the players had to fork out for them.
I agree that there is politics but that's the same in all sports. I don't necessarily agree that the best kids are at the AIS and some are there because of who they know but it's not the same for everyone. There are some talented players at the Institute that deserve to be there because they can actually play so to bag all the players is a bit unfair.

Thanks Astor I'm very happy with your explanation and agree with situation in AIS there ara kids who deserve to be there and will play top basketball but in same time there ara couple of them will never rich that level still there and occupied place from other kids.I recon that AIS coach's in general can not recognize talent's in this country.
This is my impression watching top junior basketball last 10 years. This country can be one of the best in the world compering how many talented kids playing but I think system is wrong

Cheers kindze it's the same when coaches pick state teams, they don't always pick the best and the politics comes into it again. I've watched that over the years with disgust.
I have a kid up at the "Tute" and I have been really happy with everything that they have experienced. Schooling isn't that great but as long as they have that mindset of working hard then it isn't a problem. It's not for everyone and the homesickness that the kids go through is hard for them and some of them can't cope so come home.
As long as the kids improve whilst up there, I don't have a problem. But it's the ones that don't but remain keeping a spot from someone that deserves a chance then I think that's wrong.
Basketball selections are incestuous- end of story.
Catty
Years ago
Basketball selections are based on the opinion of those who have the position to lose. If the junior teams fail they lose thier job.
Not all AIS players will even make it into the NBL. Purely, not enopugh positions each year to fit 8 people from each age group into a 10 team 8 position competition.
Bogut never went to a Nationals Championship before getting an AIS sholarship. Numerous people bagged the coaches for giving him a chance.
If you would be willing to put your name on here and state which player is not going to make it, and guarentee that you will quit your job if you are wrong, then feel free to do so.

Why do you think most of the boys go to college in America instead of going straight into the NBL? Not enough teams and it would be boys playing men. Much better to go overseas, get a degree, play good ball and come back in four years time to play NBL when they are ready and men.

Further thoughts, too many kids just drift away if they think that a scholarship at the AIS is the only option available, Basketball in Australia misses out on future players / coaches / referees / administrators / spectators / sponsors.
Open up AIS for 1 week of tryouts , let allcomers be seen & encouraged . lets find the best 3 pt shooters, foul shot specialists, shot blockers, defensive specialists, ball handellers, passing & rebounding wizards, beep tests, vertical leap and anything else that can be measured?
err William45 that is exactly what happens at the ITC centres.

How can basketball be looking so bad when the Australian under 19 Emus won a bronze medal in The Albert Schweitzer tournament in Germany against National under 19 teams from around the world in I think April of this year. Then follow it up by winning a bronze medal in The William Jones Cup playing against senior National teams in Chinese Taipei in July of this year. Followed by beating The New Zealand Junior Tall Blacks 3 nil to qualify for The Worlds in New Zealand in July next year? That doesn't sound too bad to me?

Hi gays just for your information Andrew Gaze was rejected from AIS when he was 16 sent back to Melbourne as not talented kid.
What was with golden generation from 1997 how many players made NBA or good European league and Cat you are talking about some juniors tournament in
Germany etc. Tournaments for good basketball country's are preparation for big event not for wining.

What happened with Jack Watts,i think he chose to stay at home?

William45, you must seriously live on another planet?
Jack Watts chose AFL over basketball and is projected to be a top 3 pick in the next draft. That kid is awesome at everything he touches.
