No Shot Clock

In Victoria juniors play with no shot clock. It takes some geting used to but I think it forces teams to play defence especially in the last 40-50 seconds if they want another posession.

Any thoughts?

I think a decision either way needs to be made in SA, some umps count the shot clock in juniors & others dont. Makes it confusing in close games wether to foul or rely on the ump to call a 24 second violation.

I think it should be used, there will be ugly situations where teams are going to be a few points up & just pass the ball around. Very frustrating. But a lot of courts in SA dont even have a shot clock & umps have enough to worry about without memorising the clock in a tight situation.

What you call an "ugly situation"

I call a "pressure situation"

The offensive team learns to watch and use the clock, they learn to value the last posession and they learn how to run a game out. Which like it or not is a legitimate skill.

The defensive team has to adjust to the situation eg 45 seconds on clock tied game they need to put the pressure on so they can get a final shot.
Also the losing team can't play a zone because if u r up you simply don't have to attack it.

no no no. i have played in a tournament before with no shot clock and it sucks. it becomes a 36 minute game because for the last minute of every quarter the team with the ball holds onto it and it is not exciting to watch or even be a part of. sooner or later there will be a situation where a team will build a 10 point lead in the 2nd quarter and simply stall the rest of the game. stupid.

Cheezedick,

You may have played in one tournament with no clock but I think you have no idea.

I've played/coached in dozens.

Once a team tries to stall a game they become negative and often stop doing the things that got them the lead in the first place.

If in two quaters you cant steal the ball and score five/six baskets then you dont deserve to win.
stupid!

shot clock is good, high scoring and generally a better game.

Agree for 18's and 20's but not for younger ages were patience and shot selection are developing skills not mastered skills.

I think it only affects the last 50 seconds of each period anyway.
How often does it get called anyway less than once a game, if that.
