Mills Hypothetical

What happens in this scenario.

NBA clubs are potentially keen on Mills he gets offered an NBA contract but cant commit due to being in college and not nominating for the draft.

Can he suddenly get homesick , leave college and hey what do you know sign a no cut deal with NBA team?

Do NBA rules preclude this from happening? Or can he be signed as a "free agent?"

Not saying it will or wont happen just interested in the what if.

No. He has to enter the draft first. If he enters the Draft and doesn't get picked up, then he could (if he hasn't hire an agent) return to college and be signed as a 'free agent' at any time(i.e Randolph Morris)

Don`t think it can happen - he has to nominate for the draft (or beome auto eligible ie 22 year old?), go undrafted and then he can sign anywhere...

Check out this story Randolph Morris (NY benchie) similar situation (but he nominated for the draft - went undrafted, whilst still retaining his eligibilty for NCAA)...

We were being hypothetical! I can see it being a mid to late 1st round, depending on how he plays next year in college

I think you have to be out of the college system (playing as a pro) for one year before you can enter.

I should add, if you leave college early, that is.

Twenty Four:

As far as i am aware there is no limitation like that on College players who have done at least 1 year out of high school. As long as you are 1 year removed from secondary schooling (as in your graduation - or your class's graduation) - You can nominate for the draft. Hence this Jennings kid skeedaddled off to Europe to make EUR rather than play in college for nothing... Since if he didn't go to college he'd have to sit around on his tuckus for 12 months before getting picked (by all accounts this is a fait accompli in his case)... It's a win-win he gets paid and plays against REAL professional opposition (and thus maybe increases his draft stock)...

I understand that JS, but I read the question as whether or not Mills could just drop college now, and get signed next week, without ever entering a draft. Which he can't do.

The CBA states:
(a) No player may sign a Contract or play in the NBA unless he has been eligible for selection in at least one (1) NBA Draft. No player shall be eligible for selection in more than two (2) NBA Drafts.

So, by my understadning of that, Mills would have to play somewhere other than college until the next draft before he could ever be signed.
