Wrublewski says 'Kill the Pigs'

Not yet having NBL approval or enough financial backing for his plans to rescue the Sydney Kings hasn't stopped Mike Wrublewski from making his thoughts clear early.

He's suggesting that the NBL dump the West Sydney Razorbacks from the competition and return to having a single team in Sydney. (I've got an idea - just let the Kings die and you've got one team in Sydney!)

Given that Sydney have lost a few players this off-season and taken a battering in the media, it's no surprise that he's also eager to shut down the league for a while and return running from June to December.

Daily Telegraph - Mike's plan: kill the Pigs

Didn't the Sydney teams pull some big crowds in years when the Kings and Razorbacks co-existed?

What does everyone think? One or two teams in Sydney? Dump the Pigs, or wave goodbye to the Kings?

What's in a name? Kings or West, it is a team from Sydney and gives something to the NBL to revolve around. Granted, a city the size of Sydney (and Melbourne) should be able to sustain two teams. History has shown otherwise and it may be smarter to go down the Queensland path of having teams from major centres in a populated area - 1 team from Sydney, 1 team from southern NSW and 1 team from northern NSW.

Would that work?

I agree with having only 1 team in Sydney. Dump them both and start afresh with a whole new team. (name, colours, everthing)

Both good ideas. Could merge the two Sydney teams and keep the Hawks. Not sure if NSW need another side?

A merge in Sydney would bring the league to a nice even 12 teams.

Spinner do the names
- Newcastle Falcons/Hunter Pirates - North of Sydney
- Canberra Cannons

ring any bells. They couldn't be sustained in NSW and no reason to think that any venture would work any better.

Hawks aren't that far out of Sydney anyway. Its not just Basketball either. Their crowds at NRL, A-League, AFL and Cricket are all well below those of Melbourne or Brisbane (NRL).
Thery just seem to be apathetic towards going out to see teams play.

Mike Wrublewski's statement reminds me of ..."In The Land of the Pig, The Butcher Is King " lyrics performed by Meat Loaf.

Combine the pigs and kings rosters and you would have a half decent squad

Crosswhite
Kendall
Saville
Carter
Reed
Tovey
Mottram
Knight
Dann
Rush
Williamson
Import

I know points would be an issue and they have no Dev spot but you could build a squad off these names and throw some bones to Vegas

Does anyone else put this down to another newowner trying to get into the news, though?

Buy a team, say something controversial, attempt to incite interest.

Almost every season, an owner or a coach says something infammatory, and it HAS to be for this reason.

Fiddes "sacking" Goorjian, his public spats with Seamus, Cowan going at Seamus about using the cage, Wrubleski saying "Kill the Pigs", Goorjians famous Ugg boot comments about West Sydney...... Surely its all about TRYING to grab headlines and get the NBL and your side noticed in the media.

Someone who hasn't YET put the financial backing together to officially buy the Kings saying that another team should be run out of the competition? Too ridiculous to be serious, surely?

I did wonder that - the article has a very glossy photo that makes you consider it. It's also very easy for the guy whose team has lost players and taken a media-battering to suggest the league takes a break - there are 10-11 other teams who've been signing players and promoting their season ticket packages...

From my understanding, taking this season off is not Wrublewski's idea nor is he the only supporter of the idea.

189029, technically you are correct, but it is "within" NSW. But NSW deserves Canberra doesn't it, what with all the Pollies and Porn!

I think the truth is somewhere in between in regards to his comments being publicity only, or legit immediate grievance. He was anti-Pigs and anti-Summer from the beginning. No doubt also he's being asked direct questions on changes/what needs to be done/what isn't working, and Morrissey would well know his historical distaste for both Pigs and Summer. Then you wrap it up in a hysterical Daily Telegraph tabloid headline, and there you have it. Having said that though, Mike W has always been great for a headline without prompting.

keep the pigs ya stupid idiot, but put them out west, not where they are now. The afl wants to put an afl team in western sydney and they are actually gonna put it out west, not in the inner west, 20 mins from the city.

I like some of his ideas (whether they are his or not, who knows...)

The Kings were originally formed from the combination of two teams in Sydney. (I think the Weststars and Sonics) Who is to say if it would work again.

I like the June to December idea.......
