Not too sure what they are paid, but I believe that they are on a fixed salary along with allowances. From what I have been told they work as crew and travel around the country and may call as many as 3-4 games per week. The NBA takes care of their officials with travel, accommodation etc. A couple of Aussie referees have attended the NBA referees camp (including Scott Butler who got a good report) but as yet no Aussies have made the 'show'.

Totally different to basketball in Australia and even different compared to College (NCAA). NBA referees, on average, seem to communicate better with players, and a lot of this deals with respect for officials. The NBA totally support their officials, but having said that the referees are 'professional' and as such are expected to perform appropriately. The rules in the NBA are a lot different and there are technicalities relating to 'illegal defence', 'contact in the paint' etc. Also, coach/player behaviour is dealt with more strongly than in the NBL and as such there is not as much "whingeing" that we see in games at all levels in Australia. Most NBA referees graduate from the college system and not a lot of referees in the USA have a FIBA rating. As I said previously, some Aussie referees have attended the NBA referees school (Scott Butler, Bill Mildenhall? Caroline Tsakalos refereed in the WNBA and attended the NBA school) but none have yet gone to USA full time. IMO the transition would be fairly difficult but not impossible for an experienced referee.

Jake O'Donnell and Earl Strom received $65,000 in base salaries, plus $13,259 in compensation for working the playoffs. Including the playoffs, Jack Madden earned $76,922; Ed Rush, $76,184; and John Vanak, $75,547. Among the other 19 officials listed, salaries ranged from Paul Mihalak's $64,134 to the $18,146 earned by Mike Lauerman and Bennett Salvatore, first-year referees.
