Seniors switching clubs

I was just wondering what people's thoughts are on fringe senior players in a strong team switching to a weaker club to get some more court time. There have been a few examples of this in the ABL over recent years and I was wondering if it benefits them in the long run?

I personally think it depends on the age and priorities of the player. If a player is young and wants to get better then I think that training regularly with better quality players will ultimately be better for them.

If the player is older and still hasn't cracked then maybe moving is the best thing because they may be less likely to eventually break into the stronger team (i.e. less long term potential). The weaker team may offer them a chance to play that they may never have received in the stronger team.

What are people's thoughts on this?

I think you're right, it really depends on the situation the person is in, and also the point of their career they find themselves in.

I dont think there are any right or wrong answers to this question as situations vary so much across the competition in different clubs. If playing top tier basketball is more important to a player than playing in a strong and successful club, then i guess the choice is obvious.

I certainly think a lot of thought needs to be put in before a player moves clubs, because often bridges can be burned and prior opportunities with the former club can be lost, even if their departure wasnt messy.

I wish it were the trend especially in juniors and we'd end the lack of competition that exists in many age groups now.

Don't expect this persons club to get better anytime soon...

Another way to end the lack of competiton would be to go out and find more players at school ball, clinics, go to the country carnivals etc. Or you could just sit back and wait for players to arrive at your doorstep from other clubs. And whinge when they don't.
