He was and is a serviceable player in both the NBL and AFL

I didn't rate him as a basketball player and he is probably an average/slightly above average AFL player.

anony, there is no doubt he has exceptional skills to be that sort of multi talented sports star (Even if the skills are interchangeable) but the fact remains he is an average Basketballer at NBL level! His career NBL Stats are 2.23ppg in 43 games. On the other hand, I would say he is a very useful AFL footballer and that most teams would want him.

Seen him play for the sixers and thought he was average. Seemed lazy and still needed to develop but had some potential.

NBL players have 5 players on court at once compared to 18 in the AFL - Brogan was probably the 8th best player on the Sixers during his time here and is probably around the 8th best Port Power player so it's probably fair to say his skills are similar. It's easier to be good in a team sport with plenty of players on the field, think how little respect Chris Guccione (sp?) gets from the public at large, but imagine his profile if he was one of Australia's best couple of AFL players.

With logic like that billo, how could anyone argue!

You guys are a bunch of armchair critics! The guy was about 19 or 20 years old when he won a championship with the Sixers! He was playing more than both Jason Williams and Paul Bauer who were years older than him and both of those guys went on to play a number of years.
Compare Dean to someone like Jordan Dodman as they were the same age at the time. Dean played 17 games and was a contributor in his only year with the Sixers, Dodman hardly got a game until the season was over and didn't really give them much.
Dean was a very good basketballer in the ABL and if he stuck with it would have been a good player in the NBL. Was very athletic, just needed to work on his jump shot a bit. Was a bit like a Sav when it came to taking it to the rack. PLayed for the AIS and was even selected in the junior boomers squad.

Aaah, sympathy from a fellow player who also "just needed to work on his jump shot a bit"

Panther, I agree with most of what you've said. Didn't play much but was always servicable as a Sixer. Had a year with Newcastle but again didn't play much. He was fantastic on that Norwood ABL title team. His shooting range was severely limited, but he showed some potential in other areas. I believe he definitely made the right move switching to football, but he wasn't a joke in the NBL.
