The rise of Darren Ng
What an awesome performance by the Doctor over the past 5 games. He's put up the very impressive numbers of almost 24 points a game and 6 boards over that period.
Thanks to Ng, the Sixers really haven't lost too much with their captain being out. Sure, Ng is more of a pure shooting guard than Maher and lacks the ball handling and defensive skills of Brett but the arrival of Julius has meant that there is still someone to dish out assists in Maher's absence.
I get the feeling that Darren is the kind of player that needs to play a lot of minutes to find his rhythm and then he is at his most effective. He is not suited to coming off the bench in short spurts and providing instant offence like Lanard Copeland or say a Rupert Sapwell back in the late 90's, early 2000's.
If the Sixers had acquired that extra ball-handler earlier in the season, Maher would not have had to play as many minutes and Darren's numbers may well have been more impressive as he could have picked up the shooting when Maher was on the bench. Darren's confidence is also sky-high and when you can take Dave Thomas off the dribble and shoot a fade-away jumper you obviously have some ability.
Let's hope that Darren decides to give basketball a few more years yet and then concentrate on his medical studies. A former club champion of the Crows, Dr Liptak managed to play some pretty good footy before commencing a career in medicine so it can be done.
