Announcement due at press conference in 10 minutes.

Rumour is, Shane Heal has been removed as the Head Coach of the Dragons.

Good news for the Dragons. Heal can now return to his Gold Coast home.

Confirmed now on Fox Sports.

Guy Molloy to take over for the remaining 4 games.

Does this mean the job is already taken. Phillip?

Oh dear.
I wonder what the point of that is. Not as if they can save the season now. I wonder if Cowan can save the franchise?

Boti drew my attention to his piece on it here as confirmation for the (then) rumour:

South Dragons have sacked their second coach within two NBL seasons with Shane Heal's dismissal today.

Heal, 37, replaced inaugural coach and NBA legend Mark Price at the Melbourne-based Dragons after he had started the new franchise's 2006-07 season with five straight losses.

But after taking the reins as a player-coach and steering South into the play-offs with a 15-18 record where it was eliminated in the first round by Cairns it all fell apart this season.

The team started slowly, again losing its first six games and is in the Hummer Championship bomb shelter with a 4-22 record.

The point is that certain players that the CLUB may wish to keep, will possibly consider staying under a different coach, that may not have under Heal.

Had they kept it under wraps they may have lost a lot more than they bargained for.

Smart move, IMHO.....Now all they need is for Molloy to let them run, give the potential future players (Yes, Shanahan.....SIT DOWN and STAY DOWN!!!) a chance to play and prove their worth for next season.

Could you imagine, say Brent Hobba, getting 4 mpg behind Matt Shanahan for the last few games and then not getting a contract next season only to go somewhere next season and be a 15 & 7 player off the bench for another club.

I'll take 4 losses, Guy, let's just see what they can do.

I can see your point of view DICKO and to some extent I agree. I would have thought however that given Heal was always the Golden Child of Cowan, that he may have been given the chance to go out with some dignity. Perhaps you can expand on that? (You seem to have a good knowledge of the inner workings)

Seriously though - I doubt Hobba will ever be anything more than a 4mpg player. That is unless he matures a great deal. He certainly has the tools to reach a higher potential.

Cowan still wants to win, it's that simple.

As for Hobba.....who knows? He proved he could play last year and they sent him backwards in the rotation. You may be right, but everyone should have the chance to prove themselves before they end up on the scrap heap.

is Guy Molloy a chance to coach the team full time next year??? i thought he wasnt too bad for Cairns and he served his apprenticeship after Goorj, so wouldnt be a bad option for any club looking for a new coach IMO. I agree with Dicko, run the young guys and also the imports and see what they have got for the future. Guys like Cortez Groves who can play and have done well in the past should be given a bit more freedom and his natural role so he can dominate, as i reckon he could be worth keeping by the Dragons.

Cheap Player coach option for another team ;-)

Money and losses speak louder than dignity as they should when your 4-22 there is no dignity.

Do you reckon Heal would be a good cheap option to replace the General DJ ? :)
The Dragons can't start performing, they're one of the few teams that Adelaide is consistantly better than.

It is dissapointing that Heal is gone because although he is not a good coach, he would be of good value as a player for most teams.

Do any people that are talking about Heal being a cheap option have any inkling about the dollars he has been on?
Think about the entire NBL and think about the highest paid and you probably have your answer!
