New Stadiums everywhere but here..

Western Australia have announced today they are going ahead with building a new 60,000 seat stadium which will be the new home for the AFLs Eagles & Dockers. Perth are also bust building a new indoor stadium which will hold 12,000 for sporting events and 14,000 for concerts.

In Victoria they are building a new 31,500 seat stadium being built for Soccer/Rugby right across from the MCG and Tennis stadiums. They are also building a state of the art Ice Sports centre in the Docklands.

On the Gold Coast there is a 25,000 seat stadium for Rugby / Soccer being built.

Here in Adelaide a few months back its announced there will be a $100 Million upgrade to AAMI Stadium. My beef is why are we pumping so much into this crap venue when we have so much space around the city that could be used instead?

Having been to a few different AFL Stadiums I must say that AAMI is by far the worst. The queues for food and drinks a longer. The view of the ground is sub standard (For instance, I feel closer to the action 25 rows back at Telstra Dome than I do 10 rows back at AAMI)
then of course there is the location of the ground itself.

I would like to see a Brand New Stadium built somewhere within the city parklands. I believe there was a push a few months back for one to be built on the old railyards. Perfect spot IMO. You have all the trains coming past it and a New train platform could be built for it. The Tram line has been extended which takes you almost there. Personally I'd love to see something like Telstra Dome. 55,000 seat stadium with a retractable roof. The land at West Lakes could then be sold off which would no doubt help pay for a large chunck of it.

With Australia pushing for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, I fear at the Moment Adelaide could well miss out on hosting any of it simply due to the lack of quality AAMI has.

Thats my thoughts anyway. Think Ive rambled enough. Anyone agree?? Disagree?

I like the idea of using some of the space in the Western parklands as a bit of a sports/entertainment precinct. Then funnel some of the pre/post-event traffic across to the restaurants/bars on Gouger St and lift that segment of Gouger that's between Morphett St and West Tce.

What's this area used for? Adelaide High School?

Ring the SAJC and the State Government before you try to do anything in the parklands - they had a go but couldn't get past 100 people that use the parklands to walk their dogs.

Forget AFL - how about a six court basketball stadium with a show court that seats 300? Airconditioned would be nice. It would get a lot more use than a football stadium.

Kobe - Compared to MCG, Telstra Dome, Telstra Stadium (soon to be ANZ) & the Gabba it is worse. SCG will definetly be once their new stands are built.
AAMI would be better than Subiaco but as I said. Perth have annouced they are building a new one.
So that leaves Shell Stadium in Geelong. But even they play half their games at Telstra Dome. Aurora, Carrara & Marrara which are only used a handfull of times each year.

Just looking at Isaacs aerial shot, a stadium would sure as hell improve that end of north terrace.

Go to AFL game, then hit the casino??? sure thing.

Make some parking available underneath the concourse at railyard (basement)level, build the stadium on 1st floor up...

Aesthetically, half the stadium height would be hidden from NthTerrace, as i recall the rail yards are a fair way below north terrace street level.

BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME!!!

Half the problem with the Eastern end parklands is that they're used more so by residents. That Western side is mostly shielded by industrial development, the train lines, ETSA Park, etc so you'd think that there'd be fewer complaints.

I must admit being at the Vic park races friday night myself and a few others had a chat about how good that new stadium would be.

The old stands were used by hardly anyone and I can't see 10,000 people using them on any other race day so it is time to get rid of them. The people who give a toss about removing them are too old to get up the stairs.

As far as AAMI the east side should have bee rebuilt completely before the Crows put the training facilities in. On the other hand how empty would port games look on TV.

You will get complaints that such a stadium will permanently alienate the parklands from the God-given (ok, Colonel Light-given) right of all citizens to enjoy the use of the parklands as open space.

I say that such a stadium serves the exact purpose of reserving the parklands for public entertainment and recreational purposes.

Why do you think it's Perth, Gold Coast and Melbourne doing all the development?

Perth have buckets of money coming in from the mining royalties and increases in property values (rates).

Melbourne has the fastest growing population in Australia (estimated to be twice the size of Sydney by 2050) and is without question the sporting capital of Austrlia. Events are clearly better attended in that city, based on volume (not on per capita).

Gold Coast have the tourism dollar plus a young ambitious and growing population. They are craving this sort of entertainment.

Adelaide's population is stagnant. There simply aren't the dollars or people to make those things happen here...yet.

Should the trillion dollar Olympic Dam site come to fruition as expected by BHP, then we should see some big royalties, perhaps even an influx of population, albeit transient, and heaven forbit, some development.

Until then, get a cheap flight to Melbourne. You can't beat it.

DDFan, it 'aint just AFL stadiums. It is the whole decentralised nature of our sporting venues.

AFL - West Lakes
Basketball - Findon
Cricket - North Adelaide
Soccer - Hindmarsh
Velodrome - Pooraka
Swimming Centre - Marion
Hockey - Pooraka
Netball - West Parklands

If I could think of any other sports I could probably go on...

You can't tell me that the location of the Dome isn't a particularly shortsighted decision, as is just about all of the above. Who knows, if the Dome was in town, close to public transport and restaurants and cafes, we could get much larger crowds.

Anon - I head to Melbourne several times a year for sporting events. I agree, its great!

We need to get out of this Attitude of we are only a small city. Bite the bloody bullet. A world class stadium would generate tourism and help intice more events here to Adelaide as well.

10 years ago nearly any travelling event that went to the Eastern seaboard also stopped in at Adelaide.
These days we are lucky to get 1/3 of those events.

Aurora Stadium is ripper, we went down there to watch Hawks v Tigers couple of years ago. The still have a hill where you can stand (The Railway Workers Union Hill) but much of the stadium is good quality seating. Of course, it's much easier on that scale (only seats 20-25K).

As far the rest of this.....WTF? Adelaide has restaurants and bars?

You want to improve you nightlife and restaurant precinct, import some Victorians :-)

Its the same for many sports...Athletics for example where the stadium and track is so below par that it doesnt pass regulations to hold interstate let alone international meets...There is no warm up track, in Melb they have about 20 proper synthetic tracks and adelaides sole track isnt up to standard.. The thinking of the people here in Adelaide is always when we get the numbers we will build something rather than build something and entice people to compete and get involved. Frustrates me so much

XY, to be fair...

AFL - West Lakes - Yes, this is a fair hike from the CBD.
Basketball - Findon - <10 mins by taxi from CBD.
Cricket - North Adelaide - <5 mins by taxi from CBD.
Soccer - Hindmarsh - <5 mins by taxi from CBD.
Velodrome - Pooraka - Decent trip outside of the CBD
Swimming Centre - Marion - What about the Adelaide Aquatics Centre in North Adelaide? <5 mins by taxi from CBD.
Hockey - Pooraka - Decent trip outside of the CBD.
Netball - West Parklands - <5 mins by taxi from CBD.

As you can see, the majority of the facilities are close to the CBD. Yes, there is no 'sporting precinct' like you find in other capital cities, but this is a good thing when multiple events are on in the one night - less traffic congestion in the one spot.

Hockey - State netball & hockey centre - Less than 3km from city

Skip, not to mention they are all on a short tram ride from the centre of town on which nobody ever pays!

Kev, the Aquatics Centre has been decommissioned as an international venue for swimming (surprise, surprise, it is not up to international standards) and they are building a new one at Marion. Go figure.

No complaints from me as to the location of Adelaide Oval. All our major sporting venues ought be as accessible. But they are decentralised from Adelaide and decentralised from each other.

Findon or West Lakes or Pooraka or Marion are NOT convenient locations for all Adelaideans. You only need to be on directly the other side of the CBD and you then have an inconvenient cross city trip to get there, as Adelaide has never heard of a metropolitan freeway system (that goes in both directions) or proper CBD bypass (don't even get me started).

I agree that we need a new stadium in the City, and seems the majority are of the same opinion. So much so that if a new stadium was promised in a State election it could almost sway people towards the party that supports it.

The city is by far the best option.
Adelaide's public transport is below par, getting to and from AAMI for visitors is disgraceful.
the city would be far more attractive option to build a multi purpose sports centre, similar MCG/Rod Laver but obviously would need to be slightly downsized.

Until the SA government get their head out of U no where, nothing will happen in the backwards state. They won't spend a cent on infastructure. Bit like the crows - going nowhere fast.
Move on over the border - we're happy to take on board croweaters. Move not only forward on the clock 30 minutes, but 30 years in advancement.
