Best paid aussie female athletes

The BRW Top 50 Sports Earners chronicles the fortunes of Australia's sports stars at home and abroad. Most of the list is based overseas, chasing the big money on offer in US golf, soccer's premier league in England, and the formula one and MotoGP motor racing circuits.

The best paid female Australian athlete is basketballer Lauren Jackson (at 48, with $1.2 million), who has a lucrative contract in Russia with Spartak Moscow and Seattle Storm. The only other female athlete is fellow basketballer Penny Taylor (50, $1.1 million), who also has large contract in Russia.

Anyone know what an average salary in the WNBL and ABA (if any) would be these days?

It would kind of put into perspective the hard work that a lot of 14 yo girls are putting into their game at the moment.

Haha. Average salary. That means looking at the whole team. Lucky to get paid! As a WNBL Benchie u get paid more playing ABA and even then we aint talking big bucks - maybe cover ur petrol costs for getting to trainings and games. As a starter in WNBL even then its not even close to being able to quit ur day job. Only way to make a living out of playing ball as a chick is to head o/s where they treat their athletes as the should be treated, professional athletes who dont have to work on top of playing ball.
End of the day if ur in it for the money unless ur of Opal standard dont. The girls play because the love the game. Which is a damn good reason to play but its a pity they dont get rewarded for it like their male equivalents.

Even first tier wnbl players would only be looking at a few thousand dollars for an entire season. The highest known paid player this season was rumored to be Jenny Whittle when the Caps and Adelaide had quite a bidding war for her. I mean the only aussie players that i've ever heard that actually make a living from playing basketball is Penny taylor and LJ. Others like timmsy have made their living out of basketball after retirement, she is one of the driving forces behind the dragons and has been huge for them.
