Isnt Fisher an American and Dusty & Davis definetely are. They were both great players in Australia but not really "pure" Aussies.
My picks:
1. Andre Gaze
2. Luc Longley - never did much for australia
3. Phil Smyth
4. Mark Bradtke
5. Brett Maher
Honourable Mentions
Andrew Vlahov
Tony Ronaldson - more so early in his career
Daryl Pearce
Mike McKay
Dishonourable Mentions
Shane Heal was a good player but his head needed its own post code

I don't think many people would rate Maher that highly outside of Adelaide. Don't get me wrong, I think he should be, I just think in Melb and Syd, Maher would barely make top 10.
What about going a bit more old school?
I still think Gaze winds hands down, and Bradtke is up there too. I give a vote to Vlahov for chesting up to Karl Malone and calling him a 'fuck*** wanker.' Heal must get a mention.
Werner Lynde anyone? Must check spelling...

Didn't Eddie Pabalinski(?spelling) hold the scoring record at LSU as one time?
Gaze
Bradtke
Longley
Heal
Vlahov
Maher
Dancis brothers smacking Bill Russell at the Melbourne Olympics would suggest that they were good enough for the NBA back in the day too.

Does this include women? Coz if your talking "best ever" Aussies we've gotta include Lauren Jackson.

Just love the way "thedoctor" censors out the letters "ing" and not a particular f-word. Great stuff!
1. Andrew Gaze by a street
2. Luc Longley - the guy won 3 NBA titles
3. Phil Smyth - does this need to be explained?
4. Eddie Palubinskas - leading scorer at consecutive Olympics and a shooting range that had to be seen to be believed - log on to his website and be schooled by the master - http://freethrowmaster.com/Freethrow/
5. Ian Davies - lead scorer at the Olympics and an unstoppable scorer and shooter
Bradtke, Vlahov, Heal, Werner Linde, Malcolm and John Heard, Michael Ahmatt, Maher, Borner, Keogh, Carroll, Sengstock .... all honourable mentions, but nowhere near the calibre of the first five mentioned here.

I dont think you can really rate Longley in a top 5 aussies. Yeah, he is an aussie, and yes, he did amazing things being part of the Bulls dynasty, but what did he really do for Aussie basketball?

I'd rate Longley as an australian, he learnt the game here he has returned an played for the country, he is a product of AIS he put his hand in his pocket and put $ on the table to bail out the wildcats.
he has been realistically the only aussie to make it big time - male - to make it overseas. as a junior pabulinskas was an idol to many because he was playing in the big US of A but he was playing college ball.
Heal, Gaze, Bradkte and others have been o/seas in some capacity or other with differing success but Longley is the guy with the NBA rings and not just a single 'oh boy i'm lucky to be sitting on the bench' type role in those rings.
Luc for a generation of kids playing now and coming thru the ranks as young juniors can aspire to follow in Luc's footsteps.
Michelle Timms, Rachael Sporn and others didn't have the opportunity of a WNBA to later in their careers. I'm pretty sure when you are talking the $ they get etc why wouldn't you go overseas and play rather than be a part time athlete struggling to be at the elite level of your sport and feed yourself.
Lauren Jackson has until now with injury been playing both WNBL WNBA but just when will she tire of playing all year round and opt for the WNBA.
So although Luc might not have played alot of ball in the NBL he still has my nod for one of the best ever cause he has done more than enough for basketball in this country.

It was a pity that Andris Blicavs career was cut short by knee problems as he was a pleasure to watch, in fact he was ahead of his time and I am sure people who enjoy watching athletic, skilled, talented and entertaining players would have loved to watch him play. All the above are Olympians as well.

Great picture posted here and seeing KG is on my NBA fantasy roster, I'm more than happy to see him again .....
..... but what the heck does that have to do with the best ever Australian players?????
Someone pass the red Mitsubishi please - I must've missed something.
What about in the older days 1970 or something what about Andris Blicavs. one of the top Australians to ever make the olympics.
I agree. Go Andris. He was so the best in
Australia

Brett Maher would be in the top 10 all time but not sure he would make the top 5. I'm not as familiar with some of the older guys from the 80's and earlier but the following 4 players would surely all be in the top 5 if it was a national poll.
Gaze
Longley
Smyth
Heal
Some players who would round out the top 10 include, in no particular order
Maher
Vlahov
Sengstock
Anstey
Bogut (I think he's done enough already at college, international and NBA level to be pushing top 10)
The NBL Hall of Fame also includes a few names that I know nothing about.
doctor E if you are putting bogut in after not evene finishsing his rookie season surely luc longley must be ahead of him winning 3 championships

"doctor E if you are putting bogut in after not evene finishsing his rookie season surely luc longley must be ahead of him winning 3 championships"
I did put Longley above him.
Bogut may not have even played a whole season in the NBA but I think his college career and one Olympics, where he starred, count for a lot. Do you disagree?
