Sixers need the Buffaloes

Following on from TR's thoughts about the WSR finding talent in the SEABL i think it is time that the Sixers or Basketball SA enter a team in the SEABL.

The ABA comp here is no where near the quality it was and this is shown when our teams go interstate and play against teams from the Qld SEABL OR Vic SEABL teams.

Scrap the Academy programme and put that money into the Buffaloes joining the SEABL so that the kids coming through have a real chance to play against a higher level of player and so when the step to the NBL comes the leap is not that great.

It would also allow our coaches to see other potentials on interstate traveling teams.

Kids coming through would have experience then of what it is like to travel, play with imports and play with a different group than their district side.

Many players developed through the Buffaloes and even imports got a crack at the NBL not just with the sixers either.

More so than what the ABA has given us locally.

110% support this move.

The talent in the ABL just isn't there, plus it's a huge task asking a ABL youngster to jump straight to the NBL. At least with SEABL they will experience road trips, plus play against more talented players and teams.

Some of those road trips they'll get to play in hostile environments. Anyone remember the old shed at Murray Bridge when then Bullets were going off??? Some of the loudest games I've ever seen. A road trip to Berra is also pretty rowdy along with the Tasmanian teams.

The Academy has it's place, but in this case it isn't good enough. Hell, bastardize the Academy squad (include some older guys) and use them in SEABL, just like the AIS do.

However this would further deplete the telent in the Central ABL conference by taking the best players from each team for each ABL season. My opinion is that we need to do something to enhance the talent level of the local ABL comp to allow them to compete at national finals, such as:

raise the salary cap
more sponsorship
more marketing

These are pretty simple ideas yes, but each would increase our comp's chances of getting good quality ABL players from interstate, which would increase crowd numbers and enhance the comp. Guys like Dan Richie who played with South a few years back, Todd Matthews (sure he's a local but he was obtained from Melbourne by Norwood), Dusty, Oakley, Alexander (from Southern a few years back), Truslove etc etc. If we attract more guys like this each year - say 2-3 per team, then the comp will go from strength to strength

Why would BSA spend the $200K to fund one of these teams?

If the 36ers want to spend that kind of money it would be great.

It isnt going to deplete the ABL that much. You wouldn't be playing guys like Darren Ng or other current NBL regulars. You would probably have to look at it being an under 25 or perhaps under 23 team. So players like Kane Oakley, Dusty or Truslove wouldn't be in the team even though they might be better than some of the players in the team.

Great Idea - it definitely has to be funded by the 36ers, but it also has to have the support of BSA because they will be stealing players from the comp

Noticed something about the A-League introducing a variant of the NBA's D-League (young players only) potentially called the B-League. Would be great at NBL level if anyone could cover all the costs of travel and accommodation for teams on the road.

You would not deplete any players from ABA at all.

ABA plays mid week as state league used to with SEABL on weekends.

SEABL essentailly becomes and All Star ABA team

Why would the ABA clubs want to play on Wednesday night?

What benefit is it for them?

You would be decreasing all the revenue ABA teams have for their clubs. (ie door taking and canteen/bar)

Great idea, just not necessary nor practical.

ABA midweek definitely depletes ABA. I went to ABA games nearly every week during the season this year, if they are midweek there is no chance I would be going - this would mean less money from entry tickets as well as canteen. You would still need to play ABA on weekends. Could play SEABL games at Wayville on Saturday nights remembering that they are only every other week and that could surely be fitted in with Forrestvilles program.

SA Already has a SEABL team - Mt Gambier Pioneers. Send the players down to play for them. The 36ers could do far worse than strike up a good working relationship with the Pioneers.

The problem with this idea is that effectively, although they are in different conferences, our central ABL teams play in the same comp as the seabl teams. When the buffaloes were around, the seable and our own state league were totally different competitions and therefore players could play in both, hey some whole teams played in both...woodville was one. So therefore this idea would definately deplete our central abl teams.

and midweek games are terrible for all the reasons people have mentioned above....not an option!
