The Price Attack Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) game on Sunday between the Adelaide Quit Lightning and Canberra TransACT Capitals saw Adelaide comprehensively defeat the Caps, 85-47 at the Lighthouse in
Adelaide
Kamala Lasmshed led the home side in scoring, with 17 points, including 5/7 from beyond the three point arc, and she was assisted by Layra Summerton with 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Cherie Smith, with 15 points.
Jenny Screen yet again flirted with a tricple double, scoring 11 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists.
WNBA player Tully Bevilaqua top scored for the visitors with 18 points, with Jenny Whittle the only other Canberra player to reach double figures, with 15 points, and 11 rebounds.
The first quarter was an embarssment to the Canberra side, managing to only score four points for the term, all through the hands of Whittle. Adelaide in contrast scored 22 with Cherie Smith leading the way with six points.
Canberra just could not get a shot to stick, shooting only 2/15 for the field (13%). Adelaide also dominatintg on the early boards, grabbing 18 rebounds to Canberra's six. At the first break the scores were 22-4.
The second quarter saw the Capitals fair better, managing 14 for the term, with Bevilaqua scoring seven for the term, and Whittle also keeping the Adelaide talls battling away in the middle. Adelaide shared the scoring around, getting solid contributions from all players who took to the court.
The Capitals shooting narrowly improved, connecting with 5/15 for the term, however it still left their first half shooting at a below standard clip of 23%. Adelaide continued their dominance on the glass as well, out rebounding Canberra 35-19. Heading into the change rooms for the main break, Adelaide still maintained a 39-18 lead, with Smith on 11, and Whittle on eight for the Capitals.
Canberra continued to fight for the Lightning's defensive stance in the
third term, only managing to score 12 for the term. Angela Marino, coming into the round as the WNBL leading scorer, managed her only score for the game during the third period, with her three points all coming from the free throw line. With Coach Tom Maher forced to use Whittle and Bevilaqua excessively in the stifling Adelaide heat, the Adelaide combination of Summerton and Screen continued with their unstoppable game, whilst also heavily contributing to the defence to stop the Capitals. With three quarter time showing a scoreline of 58-30, the result was obvious to all in attendance.
Frustration crept into the game during the fourth term, Whittle receiving a technical foul after she felt she had been fouled in a shot attempt. She continued to fight on valiantly, scoring seven points and four rebounds for the stanza. Lamshed hit two three point shots during the term to take over as high scorer for Adelaide, and with the result beyond doubt, both coaches cleared their benches to give their main players a rest in the heat.
Coach Chris Lucas was full of praise for his team after the match.
"They played a strong defensive game, and stuck to their scouts, keeping up the defensive pressure."
Both teams now head to Canberra for the return, and final game of the
series between the two teams, with the game to be played Friday 3 December, with Adelaide an unassailable 2-0 lead. Adelaide stay in Canberra to take on the students of the AIS on the Saturday night, with their next home game just before the Christmas break, playing Townsville on Friday 17th December.
