36ers vs Tigers tonight

There's already a thread covering tips and crowd predictions, but here's one for the game itself (if I don't start it, someone else will).

Tonight marks the NBL's unveiling of this season's live scoring.

Sep 28, 36ers vs Tigers: Live Scores at NBL.com.au | Live Radio from 891 ABC

Not sure if they still have a shot-chart to come (think they mentioned it was in the works somewhere?), but that page suggests a play-by-play and fuller boxscore as well.

From those of us who'll be at the game to those that won't - hope it works for you. I reckon they might have got it right this time after a year of practice.

That performance was an absolute disgrace. The crowd deserves far better than that.
In my opinion, this team on paper anyway, looked a far more promising unit than last year, but there is one impediment still there - the coach! Phil, see you later pal. It would apear as if he is unable to coach a team of bigger guys. Ballinger looks a real threat inside, but somehow never gets the ball.
If Phil would spend more time actually thinking about the game, rather than continuing to argue with the refs, then perhaps he may go just a tad better. Sick and tired of seeing that whinging week after week, despite the fact that there were some terrible calls tonight.
If Chappell is in fact fit, then he may be served to get on the next plane, as what he produced tonight was embarrassing. If he isn't fit, then what was he doing in the starting 5?!
If there is not a very quick turnaround in performance, watch the crowds disappear like never seen here in Adelaide.

Yep an absolute embarrassing performance. Looked like the same as last year out there tonight. We should have sacked Smyth at the start of the season and started with a fresh coach. His coaching is out dated and very questionable. I mean we are small as it is playing against probably the tallest team in the NBL yet we still persist with that pathetic match up/switch man to man and put our players under even more pressure. Is the idea for the Melbourne big guys to get confused when they have an even smaller guy on them and they are 5 foot away from the ring??

That was just embarrassing a team shouldn't come into our stadium and blow us away like that and lets be serious Tigers were in Second gear the whole night pretty much. Dmac played limited minutes and most their starters had considerable time on the bench and even Anstey and their other import fouled out. Even the Hawks last week even with a very untalented team at least put up a good fight away from their home court while we cant even put up a decent fight on our home court with a team that should be able to at least challenge Melbourne some what!

Hopefully the best thing to come out of the game tonight was the Sixers watching how the tigers play 48 minutes of non stop pressure bball no matter if they are losing or up by 25!

Sixers totally sucked tonight! Melbourne cruised all night because there was no challenge at all.. I cant believe the shit defence that Smyth has employed.... wtf is it supposed to do to the offence? one time, I saw they got Stiff posting up lil brad davidson becoz there was a soft screen at the 3pt line off the ball. Smyth oughta think of some new plays or defences or his job as coach of the 6ers is over! But i must credit Melbourne... Brilliant team, team of stars, pass the ball well, defend properly, and finish better.. also their coach doesnt spend the entire match screaming at the umpires!! I feel teh tigers were a lil hard done by from the refs.. the 36ers guards were allowed all sorts of slaps, body passes and holds simply because they are a smaller side than the tigers.
Dave thomas' dunk early on in the game was amazing but the best bit came when anstey got fouled out, the fans clapped becoz they finally got a foul, while anstey walked off clapping his hands for himself! LOL!!

well sixers, seems like its gonna be a long, hard season to come, can't see them making the eight and definetely cant see them keeping smythe as coach all season...
Barlow for MVP!!

I would give Chappell another 2 weeks since he is coming back from a back injury , however if he doesnt come gd after that i will be very dissapointed, i can obviusly see what he wants to do but it seems his injury is limiting his athleticsm. Our offence was crap beacuse our defence was, Melbounre generate there intensity from their Defence which is why they move so well in offence and make harder screens wh ich allows them to penetrate. Our screens are very weak and if it means moving off a bit to actually hit the player ( which runs the risk of being called a moving screen, but most teams do this anyways except ourselves who deleiver pussyfairy screens) than we shud do it so wse can penetrate and therefore open up shooters, and ballinger inside, who was open many times as he did his flash cuts from the low post to the foul line, but it seems our guards failed to fkn recognize he was open.

Is anyone else seeing how much Chappell is like Farley, gets the ball, takes a few jab steps, drive hard 1 or 2 driblles then as the defender commits, puts up the fadeaway jumper. Only difference, Farley would hit more than 1 or 2 a game and actually got the crowd into it.

Listen here you guys, I have been quite critical lately of Chappell and the length of time its taking for him to come good, but look at tonight's game. Sure the Tigers played 48 minutes of pressure ball but considering the 36ers were down 15 at the end of the first quarter and 16 at the end of the game, that suggests they gave as much as they got for three quarters of the game. With Chappell not 100% fit, Motteram the same, Maher playing limited minutes and the fact the team have only played 2 games together they did well. They did all this against the biggest team in the league, a team who have had the majority of their players together for atleast 4 years and not one of them with any injury suggests the 36ers actually did quite a monumental job. Give them another 4 weeks to heal and gel. That's all it would have taken tonight to reverse the situation. Even I haven't given up on them yet.

the ghost, how do you fix the problems of the season if you wait until the end? Wasn't one bad season enough, do we need to sit through another? Especially after all the hype of how the problems of last season was going to be addressed this season with a much better team. This is what people are waiting for. I said I was prepared to wait another 4 weeks for the team to come good. Beyond that time needs to be nipped in the bud then not at the end of the season. Wait until the end of the season even if progress isn't being made and what happens. Half the team again gets sacked, we end up with another new team next year with the same gelling problems. Oh, and Maher is another year older.

EC, I think Boti observed that we were down by a lot more than that until the 36ers had the last 9 points in garbage time. I don't think you can really say it was just one quarter and the rest was OK. The Tigers didn't really seem to bother putting it into top gear to me.

Isaac, Boti only reported the last 9 making the score look better than it was. He didn't report that the margin got down from 15 to 7 at one stage also. The Tigers looked the superior team the whole game, that's what made the effort to get back into the game all the more impressive. The Sixers went into last night's game much weaker than their opponent but for most of the game stayed in touch. There was, and I can't emphasise enough the fact that there was 1 lousy point the difference between 1st quarter and end of the game. I was by no means satisfied with the form of the team but do have a high expectation that they will improve enough to stay close to the top. Anything less in unacceptable.

EC where we watching the same game?? Any come back by the Sixers was unthreatening and in most part due to Melbourne knowing the game was well and truely over. Also as mentioned the sixers scored the last 9 points of the game to make the game seem somewhat reasonable when it truely wasn't. The tigers were in second gear the whole night, the Sixers had no chance to win that game at all and Melbourne did as they pleased. That result is unacceptable no matter how much you want to pad the sixers up and give them pats on the back for their apparent effort.

I don't know if we watched the same game but neither of us needed to be there at all. Just look at the score sheet. 1 point in 3/4 of the game. The Tigers shooting percentage last night was way over their usual season average. There was some luck on their side as well. Also don't overlook the fact that the 36ers have some significant injuries they are coming back from and have played a mere 2 games together. All these factors will help impove their game if those conditions improve. I am not trying to pad them up at all, I am giving them the benefit of the conditions they are playing against at the moment, a condition I certainly would not put up with in 4 weeks time.

Down 20+ in the fourth would've been a good chance for Dodman to get a run when the game was all but over.

Not a great performance from Adelaide. I thought Houndawg had some great analysis on OzHoops - believed that team defense was the core of the problems in the game.

Isaac can you confirm the rumor I heard a while ago that the reason that they don't play Dodman is because if he gets court time they have to pay him extra. So to save that money they just don't play him or Burdon. That is my understanding of why these guys don't get court time during junk time.

I have avoided reading this for the last couple of days because I knew the Smyth bashers would be at full force, they still fail to realise that if a guy misses their shots for the night, Smyth CANT change that.

This game aws a shocker and by no means should the whole team not be blamed, but it wasnt the coaching, it was the players.
The whole playing group was off, Maher even had a lower then usual game, not one of them was willing to drive through the key, passes were bad, shots they should make were missed.
Mottram was in foul trouble early, I think 1 of them was an actual foul the others..well refs havent improved.

Team had to stop playing D because they were constantly sending the tigers to the line, would love to see a count of how many free throws they had. Thats not the coaches fault, or is he causes the fouls...

I do have to say, Melbourne played very well. I think we actually did alright to not be beaten by more considering just how bad things were going.

Lots of luck for melbourne, Every attempted steal we made went straight to a melbourne player, sometimes that just happens.

Not to fussed really, everyone played well below par, means nothing as far as the season goes if they can return to the previous weeks form.

In reading some of the previous responses to this post (i.e. about cutting players in round 2) I must point out that most of the 36ers didn't play up to par on Friday. It's easy to make Chappelle the fall guy, since he's hurt but in his short 16 minutes on Friday he had 5 rebounds (which sadly was the most for the team), 3 assists, and 4 points... and that is considering he has had minimal time to get back into shape. I think we will be pleased with this team if we just give them a couple of weeks to gel. The core of Melbourne's team has been together for YEARS now. THAT is what you need for a championship team. Not players who can just dunk and dazzle. Not a high turnover rate for imports that will just put up numbers for the sake of their own stats. We have some fantastic players this season and from what I can understand they are all hungry for an outstanding season. Please mates...chill out and show some support and quit trashing the same people who you in a blink of an eye will be praising.

Isaac, the success of the 36ers is not going to be dependent on winning games against lesser teams. To make a statement, its the Tigers and the Bullets of the league that need to be taken care of. They are the ones that will always stand in the way of a championship. If you are not putting a team together that is going to have a legitimate chance at winning the championship, then you really have done nothing at all. At the moment the Bullets and the Tigers are in the way. If this is not corrected by the 36ers this season, then they have not met my expectations nor their own I would imagine. Who aims to achieve 2nd or 3rd place?

It's widely thought that the Tigs have taken advantage of the system. Quite honestly, I don't give a $h1t, & good on 'em. I pay to see quality 'Ball, & the Tigs deliver.
The 36ers didn't lie down. FFS,the Tigs got pingged for a couple of shot clock violations. A team as stacked as they are, would that come easily?
Another point, Barlow & Muursepp are major signings. Give me a brain as to how to stop either of them, without having to contend with Thommo, Nancy, Dmac & Hoare.
Then there's Stiffy, plus the sweet shooters of Corletto & Crossy as team fillers. For cry'n out aloud, have any of you guys done any homework?

I agree DDFan, Adelaide fans want to and have just as much right to support a quality team. If its good enough for Melbourne (and a few others) to take advantage of the system, its good enough for any other teams. If that is what it takes to be on a level playing field, then so be it. Until all the clubs play fairly, all the other clubs will just be there to accommodate their rise up the ladder and ultimately win the grand final. Last year's grand final was between Melbourne and Brisbane. Its predicted this year to be the same. Do the fans of all the other teams want this situation repeated year after year?

That's a completely different issue and one I've argued many times (team strength disparity).

We've also argued this "if you aren't a shot at the top, why bother trying" point before.

FWIW, I am not convinced that Adelaide will make the top four. I have said around 6-8th. So, to top that, they need to beat a bunch of teams home and away, not get in a position where the Pigs could beat them in Sydney (see what happened to Perth last round!), etc.

What are the odds that South Dragons play a zone this week. Beat the Sixers last year with it and after Melbourne's success, it would have to be coming. If the Sixers have no idea how to attack it this week then some serious questions need to be asked about the coaches.
I see some similarities already in the coaching philosophy/style between last year and this year and this is worrying. The most obvious is all ten players getting court time. Once again nobody knows where they stand. Watch players get pissed off as their minutes fluctuate wildly from game to game as the coaches clutch at straws from week to week. Have some balls, go with eight players and get them consistent minutes with a definite role. Yes somebody misses out, one or two get pissed but it's better this way than having everybody pissed off. The look on Mahersy's face when Ballinger was finally put back in at one stage against Melb. was priceless.
Also, have the aggets to tell Dench that 3 rebounds last week and this week in 20+ minutes aint good enough for his size. Don't do it, and as long as my arse points to the ground, he will settle for the soft perimeter shot. YOU as coaches have to get the extra out of players when it is not their habit.
Pulling ourselves over a win against Wollongong (who could very well finish bottom) and then trotting out the now regular excuses for the game against Melb. doesn't bode well for a win this week. Training this week should be ferocious. Will it or do we want to be 'understanding' again Phil. Unfortunately the bed has been made and any attempt to get tough will come across as fake and the players simply laugh at it.
