Chappell not as athletic wiht sore back, missed shots, Dench also missed many shots, Mottram unheard of other then one score and one foul, Ng hardly heard of except for one jumper and recieving an amazing assist from BRAD DAVIDSON.
Davidson a star, Ballinger awesome, Maher had his normal great game.

Here's my take on the game.
Davo was absolutely brilliant, we was everywhere! Taking charges, scored about 26 points, dished out some nice assists including providing Mottram with his 1st 36ers dunk (and points). Copeland was pretty good from 3 point land. Ballinger was a reliable scoring option in the post and had 20+ points. Mahersy was his usual brilliant self. Mike "skinny pins" Chappell wasn't himself tonight. Might still be sore. Wasn't athletic at all and didn't take the ball to the hole, shooting wasn't brilliant either. And what was with the high socks??? Nah, seriously, we all know Mike's a superstar and he'll bounce back. Half time entertainment was great, there were bike riders doing some awesome back flips along with some other nice moves. The crowd was a reasonable size and was energetic and loud. It was good to see the big screen TV being used even though it wasn't a fox game. Cameron Tragardh shot a three-throw which was flatter than Copeland's haircut and Jesus (Larry Davidson) threw down a sweet tip-jam on the 3 quarter time buzzer.

Chappell was obviously struggling with mobility, not much to show tonight. Davidson was awesome at both ends, Maher and Ballinger probably equal 2nd best for me. Lots to work on for the boys, esp. defensively, but gee it's nice to see a 36ers squad taller and bigger than the other team for a change!! I don't remember the last time that happened...
So much more depth than last year too... nice to see. :)
Just one thing: pleeeeease can Smyth show the team how to beat a full-court press/trap! You learn how to do it in primary school (ie. take the ball to the MIDDLE of the court, do NOT take it to the sidelines), yet every team that uses it against us at the end-game always puts us into a flap.

Did both teams forget to practice defence in the off-season? Was soft at best. Very little in the way of desperation by either team.
I hope Chappell being hurt was his excuse, cos he stunk it up tonight. Davo - great pick up and another real outside threat. I thought Ng's first half was good, his defence was probably the best out there.
My question is - where's the excitement going to come from this season?
Chappell hes got insane hops, just give him a chance roseboy

Bit harsh on Chappell, Roseboy.
He should provide us with plenty of excitment this season.

My take on the game:
Davidson - never liked him when he played against us, which is exactly why he is likely to be my new favourite player now that he does play for us. Dare I say it, had he been playing in Adelaide all these years his profile would be at least that of Maher's. He is tenacity in everything he does. He must have been involved in nearly ten steals/ loose ball chases/ team rebounds tonight. Plus he was lighting it up from outside as well. Brilliant game and best on court by a mile.
Maher - good game, will enjoy not having to take the whole team on his shoulders every game this year. Looked energised and was able to play less than 40 minutes for a change (but only just).
Ballinger - Played a great workmanlike game at both ends of the court. He is a great upgrade for the one-dimensional Horvath. Showed some deft passing too but his teammates weren't quite ready for them yet. That will come once they have played together a bit more.
Dench - Had a reasonable game without doing too much. He is a very big body inside and changed some shots up. Also made a nice drive and finish that shows that he can contribute at the offensive end. Did not get a chance to get on the end of one of his trademark threes. Will soak up some fouls at the defensive end, but with Coops backing him up we will at least have more depth.
Ng - This applies to Sutts as well, but will be much better this year from having some better players around him. I was reasonably impressed with the improvement in his defensive game, and we know from last year he can light it up at the other end from time to time. Still struggles with the ball in his hands, particularly against a trap. Looking forward to an improved year where he can properly be supported into becoming a better player.
Sutton - As per Ninja, looks better on Court with an experienced confident crew around him. Hopefully this year we wont have to rely on amateur hour anymore with players like Sutton, Ng and Mastro all on court at once. Still shows a lot of promise and has a good head on his shoulders. Will be really good if he can improve his offensive presence this year.
Copeland - Played about the right number of minutes tonight, will get used a little less once Chappell gets his game going. Put up some bricks, but he somehow also hits some of those. Will be useful if Smyth continues to use him in short bursts for 10 - 15 minutes pre game max.
Cooper - Solid defensively minded game, will also enjoy coming off the bench where he is more suited. It is good to also see him being but one of many tall players on the team. Love seeing a guy his size throwing his body onto the ball, he collected at least one loose ball and drew a foul on another occasion doing that.
Chappell - Clearly will take a few weeks to get his touch back. But when he does it will be worth waiting for. Got some nice looks, but his shot was flat as though he just wasn't quite ready for it yet. Will be better off for the run.
Mottram - Played only a few minutes, and also looks like he needs to gain some touch. He made one lovely baseline post move which showed the promise and class that he can give when he gels with the team a bit more.
Smyth - Well coached for the most part. The rotations were well thought out and made sure that the Sixers were not stagnant. I think he will be loving the depth in the side as compared to last year.
The team generally has some work to do. The switching D was a problem, Wollongong getting way too many open looks from outside. They shot the ball at 64% from the three point line to half time (and 50% for the game), mostly from open looks. This is the only thing that kept them in the game. However, the Sixers (unlike last year) have an urgency and tenacity that has been missing, which suggests they have room for improvement.
At the other end, they have plenty of scoring options for a change, with Davidson, Maher, Chappell, Ballinger and Ng significant scoring threats, and Mottram, Dench, Copeland and Cooper good role players who can put some points on the board.
I like what I see so far. I would like to see them beat a better team than Wollongong before talking them up too much, but think they are on target for at least a greater than 50% win/loss season.

Great first game, must have been 5,000 at least? Can anyone comment on the pre-game? The refs seemed pretty biased towards us, calling lots of charges for us but then calling blocking fouls when the sixers were driving, thought Franklin was hard done by. Good game but as mentioned above, not much defense. The sixers need some help D, too many times hawks players only had one player to beat to score.
Half-time enertainment was insane! The first guy doing a backflip gets about 2 metres above the ramp and stacks, then the other guy pulls off a backflip, backflip barspin and a double tailwhip!!!

impressions, as people said mike was struggling from the back or lack of match fitness. Davidson was great (still cant like him yet due to past hatred of him) adam was good, axel playing way to far from the hoop for mine. At times they really lacked an idea where everyone should be but that will come, i think they should run with some of the guys from last year in the lineup and filter the new guys through. On D i think we have a long way to go, people did not rotate very well and they had way to many open shots.
I was really let down by the music it was virtually non-existent for the most part. The shot clock siren was not on either.
Does anyway know if the floor at the east end of the court is still getting done? it looks like its not complete. Like the changes to the stadium, should be good when the new scoreboard etc is in. The next thing i would like eventually would be new seats that are blue/red to match the overall look of the place.
All in all, a win is a win but when we are all up and going i think we should be pretty good this year.

Here's my take on last nights game:
Davidson - IMO probably pick up of the season, he is a floor general which is exactly what we need. Hustles after every loose ball, play great D and shot really well.
Maher - Was solid, while not being a superstar, seemed to have a bit of calf tightness. Some glimpses of the vintage Maher which is a good sign of things too come.
Ballinger - A real workhorse, bangs bodies under the rim and fights hard for rebounds. Some excellent post moves and a reliable jumpshot. Good passing and great D.
Dench - Thought Dench played really well, haven't seen him play that close to the rim for years. Had an excellent no look pass to Ninja too. Going to be a great help this season.
Ninja - I noticed a marked improvement defensively from Ninja, and he doesn't seem to get pushed around as easily after beefing up a bit, hit some nice shots and should be good this season.
Sutton - Got too start last night and defensively looks really good. Offensively hit a 3 to finish the half I think, once he gets a bit of confidence on offence is going to be great. A long term Sixer IMO.
Copes - IMO played maybe a couple of minutes too much, but did well when he was out there. Didn't try and do too much. If Smyth uses him correctly can be a good spark off the bench. BTW Anyone else see him get up for a dunk in warmups? It must be early in the season.
Coops - Got called for some cheap fouls which wasn't his fault just bad refereeing. Is going to be much better this season coming of the bench, he also doesn't have to guard the number 1 big anymore which allows him to do what he does best and come from the weak side on D. Will have a solid season.
Chappell - I won't judge him on last nights game, it was clear he still wasn't 100% and lacked some match fitness. From what I did see though he is going to be a great pickup.
Motts - Didn't get many minutes, but looked really good when he did. Knows how to get position down low, and once he finds his shooting touch will really give us something we've lacked in the block.
Smyth - With a team like this, doesn't really need to coach them too much. His rotations seemed to be fairly good, IMO Motts should get a few more minutes, but we'll see how he goes over the season.
Not a bad start to the year, a very scrappy game and we just didn't seem to be able to put them away unfortunately. Still a win is a win and our real test will be next week against the Tigers.

Not a fantastic game IMO. Great to get the win first up though! But remember people, this was Wollongong minus Glenn Saville that we played. Without him now I did not rate their team at all. Kavossy kept them in the game in the first half with some fantastic penetration and they were on fire from the outside in the first half, 9-12 or something!
I know it is a new team and we will take time to gel but our defense was poor at the best of times. Every other team is in the same situation trying to gel with new players so this is no excuse IMO. Really have to work hard on our D.
XY, whilst I loved Davidson's game to compare him to Maher is, well, ridiculous. Maher's consistency, longevity, leadership and outright brilliance will see him as one of the greats of all-time in the NBL. That said, Davidson adds more than just his pure basketball skill. He brings intencity and a lot of it. Dunno if everyone else noticed the number of times he would be sprinting up and down the court to get the assist or make a steal or even just help out on D. Fantastic game.
Maher was brilliant despite carrying a niggle. Ballinger and Dench impressed me enough. We seem to have plenty of scorers. We're gonna have to get used to Dench playing outside people, he has always done and will continue to do so. Not a big problem given we have Coops, Mottram, Ballinger and Chappell. Chappell's defense was slow but obviously not 100% so I won't judge yet.
Our offense doesn't appear to be clicking yet but get Chappell fit and we add yet another scoring option.
The umpires had a couple of absolute howlers but were generally good, favouring us IMO.
Wouldn't have thought there was anywhere near 5000, probably closer to 3500-4000. A lot of empty corporate seats in the Northern Stand. Isaac do you know the actual figure? Not surprised given the Prelim was on last night and there wasn't a lot of hype around the opener.
Good start and looking forward to next week!
Poor Umpiring
Years ago
As a Hawks fan & at the game my take was.....WE WERE SCREWED!!! The umpiring was disgraceful. I had a chance to speak to Cooks after the game and he said five times he questioned a terrible call i.e Peters getting called for a travel after being arm barred in the back, the flop charge called against Kavossy etc etc...and the umpire apologised and said yes it was a bad call and pointed to the other ref. This happened 5 times no less!!
The Sixers were for me lucky to get away with a win. The last quarter the Hawks should have brought it back to under 5 as the Sixers were giving them good looks but they couldn't finish.
Peters is an incredible athlete but he could well be the worst post defender of all time. He had at least 30+ pts scored on him.....having Dench drive & dunk for the first 2 pts said volumes. He needs to learn post defense and stop the sloppy turnovers - he will lead the league.
The Hawks look like they could score with anybody but without a true defensive presence inside it was always going to be a tbig ask against good low post offensive players. Davidson was huge, that guy could be the pick up of the year, suits Smyth to a T.
If the umpires had've officiated well the Hawks definitely would've won. 7 pt game with 5 disgraceful calls and 4 questionable ones....the sixers were lucky. The sixers I believe won't be able to stop too many teams scoring. The Hawks are in the same boat unfortunately.

re #149683, you're right the umpiring was a disgrace (what can you say about Filmer except LOL!... I think he has one of those magic 8-balls in his pocket which tells him what he should call). But it went both ways mate - no way the match was decided on a bunch of bad calls, the whole match was basically a bad call. Should have just let the refs stay home and stick with prison rules. The Hawks 3rd-quarter effort basically shut them out of the game - notwithstanding the refs, they've only got themselves to blame for that.

Can't add anything to whats already been posted about the team, but I can say that I was very impressed with the other stuff. I didn't get there until probably then minutes before the game, so I can't comment on pre-game stuff (can anyone post what happened?) but was impressed with the things that I did see.
The court looks great (apart from the ABC stickers along the baselines, but I guess we can't really complain about those, can we?), and so does the stadium. Mostly impressed with NBA-like beats (?) played over the speakers, rather than relying on the bloke courtside to get the crowd going EVERY possession. Great job by Mal and co. with the presentation.
One thing though. Are we waiting on a major sponsor? I can't get over how low the logos are on our singlets and the only thing I can think of is that have left room on them for a sponsors name to go there?

Sixersfan,
If you read what I said, I stated that Davidson would be as big as Maher had he been playing in Adelaide 'all these years' and not playing on different teams every year as he has of late. I think he has a personality that could definitely be utilised well which could have lead to him being a household name such as Maher. Clearly he is not that, but if he played with us for the next 4 years (which would make him 37) who knows?
