Jason Sedlock steps down as Pioneers coach

Has stepped down from the coaching position, as has assistant coach Dan Stratford.

He will continue to play on next year.

I actually think this is a good decision by Jason. I think it is too big an ask to be a players coach these days. This is not to say he wont make a good coach nce he finishes playing but at this stage is far more valuable to the side as a player.
Any thoughts on who will coach next year?

Will Kym Hammond put his hand up again? Has done his apprenticeship, that's for sure.

Sedlock will make an OK coach in future years if he seeks out all the knowledge he can from other SEABL coaches of NBL Level but for now his contribution on the floor is the gel in this team. They always look much smarter with him on the floor.

Dan Stratford contributed nothing to this team with his lack of coaching skills. Good decision by him to lose some face and move on.
2008 coach guess Sonya Knight.

Rumour that Dan Thompson will be living in the MT gives some balance to the team. IMO they need two more NBL Level players, both to play the 4,5 roles plus 2 bench players.

2008 starting lineup:

PG Wilson
SG Jeffries
SF Thompson / Player X
PF Sedlock / Thompson
C Player X / Sedlock

Bench:
Mason SF, SG
Player X for SF, PF
Player X for PF, C
Berkefield PG, SG
2 x Local Development Player

If they can recruit now to pick up the best available out there, IMO the above lineup will give them a shot as real contenders.

Go the PIONEERS!

They need guards! Wilson is a back up point guard in the Central ABL at best. He should not be getting major minutes in the SEABL

They need a team!

Not enough local talent available to seriously put a team on the floor. There are enough locals to build a team from, Sedlock, Wilson, Mason, Jeffries, Berkefield.

Good to see Sedders putting his game first, a top player.

#678 Saw Wilson play some strong games at PG when given the op last season, has the potential just needs the team to run and the op. Not flashy but reliable and good D. Have other guards in Mason, Berkefield (hope he will be back), Jeffries along with Wilson, they did OK.

IMO need a 2 guard, couple of players to fill the 3,4 spot and a couple more to fill the 4,5 spot who can rebound and shoot.

Definitely need players that are here to stay and play and not just breezing through on the way to something else. 2007 will go down in history as a shocker in recruiting.

Coach? Sonya is here and available but maybe they will cast the net wider to see what is around.

#7686 also add in case I am confusing you all. I rate Jeffries as a guard / ball handler cause once he gets the ball he is not known to give it up freely, likes to control it, so why not just put him in the position.

Sonya has had an opportunity. Maybe it is time to start fresh and not keep reliving the past. The Pioneers need a fresh approach.

Of course Sonya has had the opportunity to coach 2003 South Conference and National Championships rings a bell.
Unless there are a few coaches with international and national experience hiding around the Mount, Sonya would have my vote.
I doubt the board as it stands would go that way though.
Would certainly sort out a few of the ego issues from a couple of big heads last season quick smart!

This decision is a matter of urgency. Can't see players putting their hands up if they have no idea who is coaching and what changes there are from a terrible 2007 with both players and coaching. Players should be signed within weeks to get the best of who is out there.

Hear that not one of the 2007 recruited players has stayed in town to put their hand up for the 2008 team. Good move, could save them the embarrassment of not being asked. The Pioneers deserve less egos and more passion to want to be there.
Just a thought, maybe they shouldn't promise players that coming down here will give them NBL opportunties and they may get long term stayers.

Sonya should not be overlooked just because she has been there, done that (assuming she wants the role)but as previous post stated, if they don't put the job out there, they won't know who is available.

What is Chris Lewis up to? Is he still in country or returned to the USA? Seems a respectable bloke and thought that he may choose to stick around a little?

#944 Chris definitely a decent person but IMO doesn't have the game to be playing at SEABL level as an import.

Chris Lewis has been staying in Melbourne with girlfriend, who plays for Knox. Heading back to USA in a fortnight. Hasn't been approached to return.

From all reports Dan Thompson has done his knee again, so will most likely miss next season. Would have been really really really handy for the Pioneers.
