how can Townsville secure WNBA player?

how can they do this ? is there no cap ? do they have more money than most?

to score WNBA - Detroit rookie of the yera is a bonus

what sort of dough are they parting with?

Have you not heard of perhaps the WNBA MVP from 2 seasons ago? She normally plays for Canberra???

To answer your question Russel, they make money. They run successful WNBL and local programs. They run their own venue and their own competition.

FACTS:
They've signed Chandi Jones who was 8th pick in the WNBA draft and was a rookie but not rookie of the year. The 2004 ROY was Diana Taurasi of the Phoenix Mercury. Definately someone who will hurt the Opals in years to come.

Jackie Stiles WAS recruited to play for Townsville and has previously won the Rookie of the Year award (2001) but was ruled out due to injury.

I know re LJ - but she is an Aussie, with family etc here - like the others - what I was angling at is money - generally wnbl is strapped - surely this sort of player commands reasonable coin

Right you are. Not really big news but I get your point.

Townsville probably also have the advantage of their location. It's part holiday, part business and the WNBL would be a great place for someone like Jones to work on her game. Maybe WNBL clubs could organise a loan system with a WNBA club each. That way we could get for example one Jones at each club. Especially in a season like the current one when a lot of big names are resting, injured or overseas.

Great idea Shark the Adelaide Giants baseball team had a thing going from memory with the LA Dodgers....got heaps of people to the game.....then the league died....so if baseball can do it i am sure the WNBL can do it especially if US coaches know that LJ plays in the same league the credibility of the idea would be huge

Mercury probably are sown up with Canberra already, Detriot with it's history (Kingi, Sporn, Boyd) could be an option for the Lightning.

I am sure an escape 1/2 way around the world would be a good short term break for these girls - and in a noted league

much like that big bloke that played for woodville's abl side last season

Eric Bradley was the guy that played for Woodville.

Townsville is highly regarded as the best run WNBL franchise, and are quite financial, so signing a WNBA player is no surprise to those of us who actually support the league.

It could actually have some ramifications for Adelaide, in that if Flanagans court time is cut any more in Townsville, she might be looking to come home early. ADelaide could certainly do with her now, especially now ERin Seward is also out till at least mid-January.

maybe angela marino doesn't look too bad now - especially seeing she is 3rd on high scorers list and high up on assists
