Sturt VS Southern

Southern have beaten Sturt by 2 points with a Brad Gerlach game winner with 2 seconds left. Its always good to see Liam blame the refs in a close loss.

I hope this doesnt turn into a ref bashing session... the game was a tight struggle the whole way, almost ugly.

Good win for a Southern team that has shown improvement over the past few weeks with little to show for it, hopefully this ios the start of good things.

No Daren Ng for Sturt, No Lalic for Southern.

The game was a joke to watch. Seemed like if you added up the scores for one team against the turnovers for both teams they would have come out even.

Southern Best
Clarke - Best point guard on court for both teams. Found people open when they needed the ball and sometimes even when they were not expecting it

Gerlach - Battle hard the whole night. Not one of his best games but he was heavily guarded by the likes of Bauer and Hakendorf.

Bowley - This guy is not getting any smaller. He battled dodman all night in the paint and was useful at both ends contesting boards.

Useful Minutes
Paul Smith - This guys looks like he would lift a DODMAN on each arm. Played solid minutes with a 1/1 3Pts and a couple of crucial O boards

Missing in action
Braithwaite - Spat the dummy after being benched (he was doing nothing on court so I agree with this move by the coach) but then proceeded to be the only one not to clap his team mates when big plays were made.

Sturt Best
Dodman - Good batte with Bowley. A few early fouls but got himself back in the game with some great low post action. Not sure if anyone can stop his left baby hook.

Bauer - Did an excellent job of guarding gerlach. Not much on offence but a solid job on defence.

Missing in action
Paget - Seemed to spend more time sitting the bench than playing. Really couldn't get into the game. Having said that I thought a Woods vs Paget match up would have been nice to watch. Never saw it though.

Ref23,

When did Liam blame the refs? I saw him say to Bruce after the game that he missed a call on the last play (with a few colourful words mind you), but I also spoke to Liam after the game and he said that their foul shooting (16/32)and their execution let them down and that they shouldnt have been in that situation...no mention of the refs at all (not his style I dont reckon to blame things outside of his control).

Looks like your just fishing Ref23....credit to both teams for putting on a tough gritty game and for Snake to make the clutch shot at the end.

I heard Liam going ALL game cos his preety little Sturt boys were flopping and not getting calls, didnt think 1 player would make that bigger difference in such a "great" club like Sturt but Darren Ng sure does. Always refs fault at any level of play when Sturt either miss a shot, turn the ball over or lose a game!!!!

#136939,

That comment is comical - who did Liam say that it was the refs fault that they loss the game too - can you put a name down?? Your just throwing comments out there with no basis. After the game the Sturt team (players and coaches) were lamenting their own mistakes for losing the game - foul shots and execution. I dont remember one comment about the refs - they knew they only had themselves to blame.
All credit to Southern for playing a gutsy hard fought game.

Ref23 - "I heard Liam going ALL game" - of course you HEAR him...he yells out a lot about what plays to run and their scouting report. He has a young, inexperienced team (which yes are "preety little" as you call it) and in his eyes they require lots of reinforcement from the sidelines regarding their tactics.

On the occasion he will say something to the refs - buts its usually in the form of a bad joke! But to suggest that he craps on all game to the umpires is just not true.

Seems like you may have a personal bias against Flynny for some reason??

Nah no bias against Liam but the way he carried on after the game. I now know why the rest of the boys coaches at the club r total dickheads, they take after the aba coach when they lose a game. It always happens to me when im reffing a game that Sturt are involved in.

Ref23,

Your last post is completely rational and well thought out. I particulalry enjoyed the points about the Sturt coaches being "total dickheads" and that all of them model there courtside demina around the ABL coach. These are well constructered points of view that dont at all reak of personal predjudices or a general lack of respect for others. Well done!

Let me add that, I think its a credit to you that you could take time out of your busy schedule of auguing in other threads (re: Photos - Sturt v Southern) with your fellow Tigers club members on which of your ABL bench players cheers the loudest. I think we all recognise how important this debate is to any club - maybe there should be a "Cheer O meter" on the bench to find out who is the ultimate towell waver. From the intellectual prowess you have displayed in this thread - I am sure you could even invent it.

Actualy from what I have seen from the Sturt Aba coach this season he could be in line for "Coach of the year" and he is always well controlled towards the officials.

Definitely one of the better behaved coaches imo

I think you'll also find that the rookie Sturt ABL coach is one of the front runners for the Technical Assistant Coach for the sixers role

Tina,

Very well said. But you probably have to take into consideration that Ref 23 is only a minor, or at the very least someone who has never played basketball at a high enough level to understand any more than "ball go in basket". And sad that they have to poorly represent a club that I actually think has some quality people.

Oh and Ref 23, you are a dickhead.

CMV braithwaite played a total of 10 mins i think he has a right to be pissed MVP from last season to minimal minutes this year is pretty crap. and if you actually watched you would have seen him clapping and joking on the bench with the other players open your eyes buddy.
He came on and scored straight away so how can you say he did nothing maybe you should learn to play ball i would like to see you compete at the ABL level....

You don't even know who I am. I happened to be sitting right behind the southern tigers bench during this game. Think I had a clear view. My opinion is that Clarke and Gerlach should be starting together and Braithwaite should be coming off the bench to give each of them some time to rest. Goodenough should not be starting.

Some people just dont get it sometimes.

In the last two games v North and Sturt a couple of players haven't had the luxury of large minutes. I dont think its a blight on their ability, more a horses for courses principal. The games have been very tight and you go with those getting it done.

I wonder if some people on this forum would prefer 30 minutes game time and losing over 10 mins and a win?

Ref 23,

From the other inaccuracies you have posted on this thread, I would probably lean towards calling "BULLSHIT" on anything you said.

*Relaxes back into his chair and watches yet another thread turning into Southern people arguing amougst themselves*

By the to ABA ref its the coaches that pick "coach of the year" not the ref's.

Of course the sturt rookie coach would be in line for tech assistant coach for the sixers, thats why everybody wants to be a part of sturt wether it be coaching or playing, so they can do their apprentice ship at the sturty sixers to take that next step up to the sixers.
But it all goes round in cycles,30 or so years ago if you wanted to get somewhere in basketball you had to play for west adelaide, who knows maybe in another 30 years Centrals maybe that club!

If this so called 'cycle of success' was indeed fact, how do you account for some clubs being constantly successful and other clubs having never had anything more than 1 season of success?

ie Sturt winning 14 of the last 20 State Champion Club awards.
