Choosing the Referees for games

I was watching a Reserves game last nite that was between two top of the table teams. Both teams hadn't lost a game. So it was going to be a tough game. And with no ABL over Easter there was going to be at least a few starters that would be suiting up.

As the game went on it was very evident that the two referees were very much out of their depth. Now I know that one of them is a newly promoted ABL referee and the other is just starting off in the senior comp. So I am in no way bagging them.

My question is who decides what referee's are put on these games and at any stage do they look at where they are placed on the ladder???

I understand that this would be very time consuming to do across the board but maybe even if its just reserves games (guys and girls).

Thoughts????

It's Neil Poulton who does the referee rosters (for everything reserves down). I don't know if it is a program that he uses or he does it himself manually. Either way there would be problems, I think if you have concerns raise them with him, if he doesn't give you a satisfactory response raise it with Paul Arnott or Mark Hubbard I guess.

I have come across a similar problem, where a referee is put in a position to call a game which is beyond his capacity to keep up and as such make accurate calls. This ended up with both teams being extremely frustrated and 5 tech fouls plus lots of other frustration all round (referee, both teams and coaches).

Its not fair on referees to expect them (yes he was rostered this way) to ref a solo game, let alone one where they cannot keep up with the pace of the game. Surely it would make sense to put a higher level referee by themselves for the game and pair a referee such as this with someone else for the night.
It would not only solve the issue for the teams involved, but would also ensure that the referee doesn't cop any backchat or abuse which might arise from the situation and dent their confidence and more importantly willingness to be involved in our sport.

Let's petition for Denny Crane as umpires boss. As long as any ump not carrying his weight can get a slap in the face from his partner--equal rights
