Burn out or Chronic Injury

The joys of being a parent of a child being selected for SASI and in the state squad are being tempered by concerns that the quantity of trainings will work against her body.

There is no off season in basketball with only a short Xmas break to let the body recharge itself and then the extra seven hours training per week on top of the clubs three hours plus games and school sport means that the demands on the body are high.

I suppose you should not be in the kitchen if you dont like it when the temperature gets too hot, but I am wondering whether this is a war of attrition so that only the most hardiest survive life as a junior, regardless of talent. Apart from injuries taking too long to right themselves there is also competition from school work and social life which is becoming more attractive. Should dedication be at such a high price?

1 out of 3 constructive responses won't be such a bad rate of late. 125694, school WORK my friend, school WORK.

I think, if you want to reach your maximum potential in this day and age, and especially with basketball, social life certainly has to be sacrificed.

However, if it starts impacting school work to the point where fail grades are possible, surely a line has to be drawn, and a coach has to understand.

And I guess it comes down to how much that player wants to make it in basketball, if they really want to then they will have to sacrifice. Unfortunately, to be up there with the best these days you have to put in all of the trainings/games etc that are required, so to me there is not much of a choice if you want to make it

Don't look for many constructive comments on here about this subject as most think if you cant take it get out.
We lose so many girls to basketball its becoming difficult to fill senior girls teams and most girls know that in the last 2 years of sasi whether they have a future or not.
There is way to much basketball played and way to much training associated with it that the drop rates will continue to climb.
I sympathize with your plight and all those who face it.
One needs to weigh up what rewards are on offer to girls in particular in basketball when you balance it with the requirements.
Talented boys have a more of chance at reasonable dollars for their sarifice but girls are doing it for love. Very few will get opportunities and none the remuneration but their training regimes are the same.
Maybe thats enough reason to change the endless days of basketball trainings.

Ultimately, what is she doing it for? See how high her ability is, striving for a dream or goal, just to excel at her best, well then keep going for it!! Get rid of school sport though imo. If she wants a social life, then that answers your question.

Making money as a player may not be a goal or maybe even possible, but do not discount, but try to research and understand that a University degree costs thousands of $$$ss in HECS here, where if she is good enough, she could get a FREE education at USA College because of her basketball playing ability. $10-$20K USD per annum is a rough guide as to her "earning ability" in education cost savings.

Good luck, just ask her "Why and What for?"

Many thanks for the supportive relies. I suppose the main thing is that she is enjoying the challenges and will get our support as long as it is important to her. Apologies for going over old ground but it would be a perennial that would come up each year with a new batch of kids coming through.
