By STEVE SMITH (Border Mail)

ALBURY-Wodonga Lady Bandits coach Scott Sinclair resigned from the club last night following a player-led revolt.

Interesting to be a fly on the wall!

Wonder if the coach might have been better off if he had of encouraged the players to go clubbing with him.

I must admit here I was extremely close to the hot seat and this is a bit of a long one but the question was asked - was there more to the story - YOU BET!

Are there problems with Albury / Wodonga perhaps there are The 5th coach is now in charge of the women's SEABL team and they have only been in existance for under 1 and 1/2 seasons!

Was it the fault of the coach asking players to stay outa the clubs the night before games - well perhaps it was. Was it the fault of the coach wanting a more defensive structure played rather than what "stars" wanted to play - hmmm well that was certainly picked as a fault - even though the score was on the board in the coaches favour.

At the time - 3 from 4 win / loss ratio and a close loss at that, would indicate that the problem wasn't with what was being taught and ran first ever win over WNBL bound Bendigo first ever wins in and over the Tassie teams recruitment of role players which were lacking last season etc& but more so a problem with perhaps court time for some and a value of false friendship offered by others both from within the playing group and outside.

The committee are one of the most dedicated hard working group of people around, with roughly over half who have daughters in the squad which is not necessarily a bad thing on its own.

Once the Committee followed the path they did hands were tied and there was no choice other than for the resignation to be made. Had the committee had shown stronger leadership and not have succumbed to a couple of players (and other) influences and investigated the matter thoroughly then it may have been a different story.

Were there close by influences undermining what the program at the time was attempting to create most certainly, something that individual committee members and club executives were aware of but obviously failed to stop or couldn't stop, was the coach aware of what was being cooked in the end behind his back - no - not at all!

It has been widely reported (local television and electronic media) that a playing male member of the club who also sits on the womens committee had met with the mens coach and sought his permission to play and also coach the women at the same time, prior to the start of the season whilst staff had already been put in place and were up and working. yes I did say he is / was on the committee.

Whilst the Committee as already said were / are hard working the on court back up for the coach was to a point, well you decide... There was no Manager appointed until just days prior to the first home game and no full time assistant coach until just a mere fortnight from the teams first game even though the squad had been working since November.

As it has been already pointed out earlier in this post the 5th head coach has just been appointed and if he doesn't go again next season for what ever reason that will be 6 coaches in 2 seasons...

Also it seems funny that certain committee members weren't allegedly informed of what was going on - and sadly have since put on hold their relationship with the club.

So are the incoming WNBL players not involved?
Just a local issue?

Simply put it is widely known in these parts that the Board member mentioned in one of the threads above held a desire to coach long before the ex coach was appointed

That Board member also runs another business, jointly with the naming rights sponsors 2IC. And at least 1 other person on the Board works for the naming rights sponsor

One of the things known to have come to light since all this blew up is one of the players who is known to have spoken out against the ex coach is a very good family friend of the Board member who wanted to coach

This may be a little odd but I had to have a look at this after being told this morning that this had reached you guys over in SA. and thank you for comments. I was then and stil am obviously dissapointed by what happened and yes I would have liked to be a fly on the wall as well let me tell you. I am not going to carry on and say this person said this and this person should have done thast, other than to say I am obviously dissapointed in the way the ladies committee went about things. The club put their spin on things when I resigned and from comments received at my end the media asked the right questions. Had I have known how things actually worked at the Border Club I would not have taken the position in the first place. I have learned a couple of important things as a result of this (as have the club I am told)but it is time to move on and get on with life. I wish the club well and wish the new coach the very best of luck. All the best and a happy belated Easter to everyone.

Small town mentality doesn't only exist on that border, seems to be shades of a border team a little further south here - coach, new 2007 asst coach and 'found some minutes at last' 2007 PG all related. A few players who have been in town a few years complete the 'one big happy family/friendship circle'. So while the issue is a little different than Albury, the underlying issues are very similar - you allow a small group (& down south, it is 1 -2 selfish players and poor coaching) to lose focus on the big picture which is team, team, team, then everyone loses.
Coaches and board have to be strong enough to distance themselves and be above the team per se, otherwise discipline and correct decision making will never occur.

It seems that the Albury issue isn't dead and buried as the their Committee may have wanted.

Word coming out of the players camp is that the group are split severley in 2!

Surely the trouble makers have to be removd but then again, as it was claimed earlier that parents sit as committee members, must be great meetings.

With all that's gone on it's starting to sound like it's time to wind up the women's team, too many egos or at the very least, time for the ABL or SEABL to have a good look at what's going on.

The latest chapter at Albury Wodonga has just been played out with yet another coach resigning from their women's SEABL team. If you include the playing caretaker coach whilst the last was being appointed, that will now make SIX coaches GONE in one and a half seasons! And the new coach is the bloke from the women's committee who will also play for the men as well (as mentioned in previous posts) This is the same guy who who wanted the job 3 coaches ago now.

Very intersting.
