Boomers squad announced

Basketball Australia is proud to announce a 17-man Australia Post Boomers squad, whose players will vie for a place on the national team to compete at the 2007 FIBA Oceania Qualifying Series in August.

The Boomers have to defeat the New Zealand Tall Blacks in that series to qualify for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

"Forget Beijing and forget medalling we've got to qualify first," Boomers head coach Brian Goorjian said.

"Only the World Champions Spain and the host nation China are guaranteed a spot in Beijing, so I can confidently say that all the other nations are thinking like we are.

"At this point, qualifying is the goal."

Basketball Australia also invited 21 athletes to attend a Try Out and Development Camp at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in early June as a precursor to the Boomers tour of China in late June.

The athletes that make an impression during that initial camp will be invited into the squad that will attend Boomers Camp 2 on the Gold Coast in mid July.

"The short term goal with the June camp is to find a hidden nugget and to introduce as many people as we can to the Boomer culture," Goorjian said.

"The medium term goal is to get all the best players aboard and on one page.

"The goal at the end of all this is to have a team that is playing well and, as I said, to qualify against New Zealand."

The Australia Post Boomers 17-man squad is as follows:

David Andersen CSKA (Russia)

Chris Anstey Melbourne Tigers

Stephen Black Brisbane Bullets

Andrew Bogut Milwaukee Bucks (USA)

The 21 players invited to attend the Try Out and Development Camp are:

James Harvey West Sydney Razorbacks

Russell Hinder Sydney Kings

Jacob Holmes South Dragons

Nathan Jawai Cairns Taipans

Luke Kendall Sydney Kings

Julian Khazzouh West Sydney Razorbacks

Aleksandar Maric Nebraska (USA)

Steven Markovic Red Star (Serbia)

Head Coach Brian Goorjian departs Sydney International Airport this afternoon at 1700h AEDT for a four nation meet-and-greet session.

He will visit Australian players and foreign coaches in Germany, Russia, Lithuania and the United States to see the players in their foreign environment and to discuss the Boomers' 2007 campaign.
I wonder if Goorj and Smyth will cross paths in the States?

Any Chance of more Kings players being invited seeing as though we didn't have enough for the 2006 world champs? Cue sarcasm

Give Helliwell a bike, helmet, EPO and a book on training for long -distance riding...

I hate to hate on a player but he was atrocious in the WC`s... As they said about another famous NBA player (who frequents these boards - and i paraphrase) " ...he may be one of the greatest defensive centres to ever play the game - for his ability to stop the offense on BOTH ends of the floor..."... This is coming from one of his biggest fans pre-WCs (if he knew how to put the ball away without travelling we wouldn`t have met the USA in the second round... or course there are others to blame too...)... His spot should be taken by one of the young up and comers in the NBL or NCAAs - it`s not as if there is any lack of guys (Maric, Loughton, Nevill, Khazzouh, etc)...

I'm surprised that more former SE Melbourne Magic players weren't selected - where is Ronladson, Parkinson, Frank Drmic. I'm sure they could dust of Mike Kelly!

An injured Barlow should still be in there ahead of Kendall! Maybe it's got something to do with him moving to the Tigers...

What the hell is BG referring to when he says he wants to fins a "hidden nugget?" Maybe Barlow wouldn't play "Find the Nugget" with BG, and now he has been cut...

What do people think of Barlow??
Personally I wouldn't have minded the Sixers looking at him, he has a fair bit of game..

Glad Hinder is out now!

I just don't understand bar the Kings connection why Jason Smith get so many chances. I'm still shaking my head over his selection.

Last time someone I know played 'find the hidden nugget' he sure as hell wasn't talking about basketball. The 'hidden nugget' was found at the bottom of the corn flakes box after a 24 hour search. Good old recruit training days.

DB5 - really like his game. Prototype basketball body, can shoot, can create, entertaining to watch. Wouldn't have been unhappy at all had I heard that Adelaide tried for him.

Yeah Jason Smith did sh$# all this season and still gets picked. I can understand why Barlow isn't in the squad, his ACL injury will take along time to fully recover from. Anybody else not in who should be? Interesting to note Mee is in the squad, i know he's a good pg but at 37-38 shouldn't be be looking at the younger guys more.

You must question some of the selections, such as Darnell Mee.

As much of a fan of his as I am, I can not see him getting a game for the Boomers, so why bother naming him in your team? Wouldn't it be better to put another young kid in who won't make the team, but at least give him the opportunity? Maybe he will be the nugget Goorj is looking for.

Also where is the Opals team Isaac? Was also released and contained a fair slice of current and former Lightning players, including Michelle Brogan (I'm still puzzled by this one, is she even playing anywhere?).

Sam Woosnam was looking to push for a spot, but was not named. Erin has been named though, despite her injury, looks like she will get a chance to prove herself.

Cheers Isaac, I read recently that people thought he was a NBA chance...before his injury.

The Darnell choice, is that a slap in the face to DMac re: Athens???

If Newley can be rated an NBA prospect, then I don't think Barlow would be that far off the pace.

Its a disgrace barlow is not in the team and i think we can certainly read that as he wont be a king next season.

How the hell does Tovey get in there, bloody ridiculous! Interesting to estabish the opinons of the squad from Gordie and Joyce. I think if either one of them were head coach it would be a lot different!

Yea i was interested to see no Barlow, is it because he is injured??? or is it because he is leaving the kings, cos Goork came back from the WC sayin Barlow is a legit player for the Boomers future so if he isnt injured n not playin Goorj should have some questions to answer. Glad to see Darnell Mee in there, him and CJ will make a strong PG rotation

What do you folks think of team with

starters --- bench

D MEE --- CJ BRUTON
S BLACK --- B NEWLEY
S MacKINNON --- J INGLES
M NIELSON --- M WORTHINGTON
A BOGUT --- C ANSTEY
--- M WORTHINGTON
--- D ANDERSON
--- C ANSTEY

IMO the starting group would set an excellent defensive tone and offensive tempo , Black can guard their smallest player and Darnell can use his nous to control the group .
This allows us to crank up the pressure offensively with a very potent and diverse bench .
I believe this team with the right tactical formula and correct use of players would be a very strong team .

Black as my starting 2 guard, i'll pass on that thanks.

Actually looking at that list again, I'm struggling to find a quality 2 guard at all. Heaps of SF and such and a few combo guards, but a real shortfall on typical 2 guards besides Newley.

The most disappointing and depressing thing about that full extended list is there isn't a single Sixer on there. Just goes to show how far off the pace we are with our roster and developing our current young guys (missing Jake and Oscar of course).

Hope we can turn that around next season.

Totally agree Sawmeinhalf. 38 players selected and not a single Adelaide player. What's worse, is that there's not even any argument that one *should* be there!

In fact, if you're going for worst-of-the-worst, how many are either South Australian or have played for the Sixers? Bloody heaps!

(Maher's retired from international games so he doesn't count)

Personally i think Matty Knight is a great player Goorjin should really try to develop him coz he is young he has height and has had a very good college career at LMU. I alose think bruce should b point guard and Mee should be a shooting guard because bruce needs game time to increase confidence. Theres no good having such a quality player in ur team in Aaron Bruce if you arent going to use him..Where is Ryan Kersten and that Dillion guy from New mexico State(he is an aussie and was going to apply for the NBA draft)-u dont hear much of him
