wondering how or what recruiting criteria happens for aussie basketballers to move from -
local to ABL
- ID happens at club level.
SASI to AIS
- Nationals, State Coaching Directors, performers selected for All Australian Camp. AIS scholarship holders selected from All Australian Camp.
AIS to NBL / WNBL
- If youre at the AIS you are high profile every nbl coach and ass. coach would be aware of the athletes at the AIS and be watching their development.
NBL / WNBL to NBA / WNBA ?
- if you make the NBA you tended to have gone to COllege or performed well at an Olympic tournament.
NBL / WNBL to Europe / other leagues ?
- U need a European based agent and unless you are an International type player (to get a job as an import) you need dual citizenship. Its like going for a job they look at what level u have played at and what numbers you put up at that level. Not much "talent identification" goes on here. Some people may go over there and play Div 2 in the hope of getting signed by a Div 1 Euroleague team.
does the AIS have a "noticeboard" for vacancies in higher leagues?
or do overseas scouts come over?
I know college americans (scouts0 check out our junior national titles / representative teams.
is it word of mouth?
- AIS is respected Internationally. The coaching staff have contact with a wide array of colleges. Any player can submit their details to a COllege recruiting manager or Clearinghouse for consideration for a scholarship. Also many former collegiate players playing/coaching ABL and NBL often assist up and coming players get scholarships.
do many high profile aussie players have managers?
- Most NBL and many ABL players have a manager. You dont need a manager to get a college scholarship though.
