NBL: Harmison talks referees

There's a bit of a fluff piece on the NBL site right now (that, to a pessimist like myself, seems awfully like a specifically timed and placed reaction).

Still, a few NBL fans might find some parts interesting, especially talk about an increase in technical fouls called (something relevant to 36ers fans this season)

Have a read

Here's a snippet from one section about the NBL's efforts to maintain or improve the quality of refereeing.

One of the other things we did this season was send video of a random selection of games to the head of the NBA Referees, Ronnie Nunn, to ask for a critique on the way that our officials were handling the games. We have taken Ronnie's feedback on board for inclusion in future referee-training sessions but interestingly, we were told that the overall standard of our refs was comparable with that in the NBA considering ours are part time compared to their full-time referees.

I am sure the Nba ref's would be paid much higher than those in the Nbl.

There are many Nbl ref's with years of experience and so how the league introduces the new officials in the next few years will go along way in the standard improving?

Also Nba umpires would travel full time to different venues where australian umpires work the same venue for much of the year
