Thanks for the info all, but looks like we won't be needing it. After end of school pranks, as seen in the Advertiser, several Blackfriars students have been severely repremanded. As a result, 3 of the State Championship winning team members are not allowed to attend nationals, including a starting 5 member.
Still have a good core group, but most likely scenario is that we will not be sending a team to Albury.
With the level of competition, bringing in a few ring ins to make up numbers would be pointless. With a full team, we could compete and play hard.
The reality is that if we sent a team over without the three suspended members, we would be running our first five all game. In a week long tournament, fatigue and injury are a real problem. One rolled ankle or corped thigh and we would look second rate. Six players is just not enough.
Most disappointed in the boys that were stupid enough to ruin a great year, where we went undefeated, beating quality opposition. It was out of character and fuelled by a combination of alcohol and peer pressure. I hope a lesson has been learned.
Even more disappointed for the boys who didn't participate and have to suffer the consequences. A once in a lifetime opportunity is missed through no fault of their own.
And for Blackfriars. Although a great sporting school, basketball has never been its focus. Blackfriars always has first rate footy, soccer, cricket and water polo teams, but it will be a long time before they field a basketball team like this one again. In saying that, I respect the decision by the school to ban the guilty parties from taking part in the nationals. It shows that they have their priorities right.
I suppose its good luck Pasadena, as SA's next best. Hope Joe and the team play well and put on a good show. All the best.
